Title says it all really.

Thanks.

DS1 loves them. He is 8, and has been reading them for the last year. Not too horrible at all.

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/04/2012 16:45

I'd say for 7-11, though I know teenagers who read them too. Not really horrible, just some of the more "colourful" bits of history that are not always in mainstream history text books.

I'm reading one to my 5 and 6 yos as their bedtime story after they got hooked on the tv show. Have to stop every second sentence to explain something, but they love it.

I feel differently, I found them way too horrible for my just turned 8yos. I would say best for age 9-10+.

My 7 year old daughter loves them, The Works has a box set of 20 in for £19.99 (they also have Horrible Science and Horrible Geography)

CMOTDibbler · 24/04/2012 09:17

I'd say 7 up - my 5 year old loves the TV programmes, but the books are a bit more gory/explicit

bringbacksideburns · 24/04/2012 09:21

Best thing ever! My son got the boxed set when he was about 9.

Although apparently parents are complaining in some libraries about them.

Because as we all know, History was all sweetness and light, King Henry V111 was a sweetheart and there were never any executions or wars Hmm

Voidka · 24/04/2012 09:42

My 10 yo has been reading them for a couple of years - he loves them and the TV series.

If they are a fan I would definitely recommend going to the theatre show - its brilliant!

DD(8) is reading them at the moment and is pretty fascinated by the gore (Mum, Mum, Look! He had his fingers chopped off! With an Axe! And there's blood!) but seems to be grasping the bits behind it as well.

fussbucket · 24/04/2012 09:49

Got the box set when ddtwins were seven or eight, and they've said in the past week or two that they'd like to pass them on to their cousin now - they're 13. This may be also because they've read them to pieces. Still watch the telly programme.

wearymum200 · 24/04/2012 20:08

Depends how impressionable your dc is I think. Ds1 is 6 and doesn't like them, but not because they're gory. He prefers history told straight, i think!
