Hi my daughter is about 4 and a half. We're going on holiday soon and I'd like to download some good books to my kindle that I can read to her at bedtime or in the car (rather than carry lots of books lol)

I think she's getting a bit too old for julia donaldson, she loves them, but I want to try something a step up, for want of a better expression. She starts school this year too.

Can anyone recommend good books? Someone suggested Roald Dahl to me but I'm wondering if that's too much of a step up lol

thanks

me again, having a look on amazon - remember loving pippi longstocking, famous five, secret seven, the worst witch - but she can't be old enough for them, surely? Can't see anything I remember reading at that age, 6 maybe, not 4...

Some of the old classics are still good for that age I think - my no. 1 recommendation is always Teddy Robinson, but also Milly Molly Mandy, My Naughty Little Sister, Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, The Little Wooden Horse, Gobbolino the Witches Cat.

If you want something a bit more up to date the Winnie the Witch chapter books are very good (they're intended as first readers, I think, but dd liked having them read to her).

Having said that I don't know whether any of the above are available for Kindle!

Esio trot I think she'd like from the Dahl lot, and the Giraffe, pelly and me.

Winnie the pooh. I was given it at that age and loved it.

Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs.

Any of the Shirley Hughes.

The Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair stories. Secret Seven rather than Famous Five (they are a bit shorter and easier to read). Definitely Roald Dahl too.

Roald Dahl- The Enormous Crocodile and The Giraffe, The Pelly and me
Winnie the Pooh- my DD is big fan
Little Miss Pepperpot
Mr Men

Do you have audio books for in the car (on CD?). We have got really into these recently for both kids (age 5.5 and 3.5). Favourites this Easter have been Tiddler and Horrid Henry- HH might be bit old for your daughter and Tiddler is sweet but a tad young perhaps. Others on audio they like are Winnie the Witch, Winnie the Pooh, Paddington and (groan) Bob the Builder.

Paddington chapter books
Dick King Smith: Sophie books, Saddlebottom, Sheep Pig etc
Katie Morag
Start with the shorter Roald Dahl: Fantastic Mr Fox, esio trot etc
Wind in the Willows (original version) a surprise hit with my 3yo DD

thank you all so much!

I like the look of winnie the witch and maybe some roald dahl. (I preferred blyton when i was a kid. Started reading famous 5/secret seven at 6 years).

Winnie the Pooh seems a bit too complicated.

Currently trying her on 'the magic faraway tree'. I've found she enjoys it more if I summarise each chapter rather than read it word for word. She did start looking for the pictures but now sits and listens and comments "they're not allowed up the tree!", "what land are they going to go to now mummy?"

She didn't like pippi longstocking.

Thanks again!
