Yay or nay?

This was one of my favourite books as a child and I would love to share it with my daughter. She loves stories about magic and crazy characters, and can easily remember from one night to the next.

What d'ya reckon? :)

Yes! I read it to my DD when she was 4 and she loved it! And I loved remembering all the characters. Moonface, Silky and Ole Saucepan Man Smile I read The Adventures of the Wishing Chair books to her after Faraway Tree.

I love Enid Blyton, she was my childhood, I have most get books on my kindle to read to the children myself when I get nostalgic, famous five is still great. Grin

VickityBoo · 10/04/2012 20:39

That's lovely Smile I know I read it myself and don't think it was read to me. I'll have to dig out my very much worn and loved copy.

See how she gets on. I've just started reading chapter books to my 5.5year old - she's a great reader but just wasn't interested in chapter books before now and think she's getting a lot more out of it than she would have done earlier.

Can't wait to start the Faraway Tree!

mrsotter · 10/04/2012 20:43

DD1 is 4.5.

I'm reading her a mixture of Winnie The Pooh and Dilly Dinosaur.

Can't wait to start on the Magic Faraway Tree, I have the set so will start with enchanted wood.

She has only just become ready for chapter books. Your dd might be ready now, you won't know until you try!

gemma4d · 10/04/2012 20:44

I tried at 3.5 and DD just wasn't old enough. Asked a lot of irritating stupid "why?" questions and just couldn't follow the plot enough. No harm trying though! Good luck.

I've just started the lion, the Witch and the wardrobe with 4.6yo dnephew. We got to chapter 13 in two days, he loves it (he's obsessed by the film)

If she can sit still and listen long enough, then, yes, the Faraway Tree is a wonderful story, although I still think it would be better left for a year or so until she is fully able to appreciate the wonder of Moon Face et al.

PurplePidjin - I would have thought both book and film of TLTWATW too old in content for your average 4.6 year old, especially the whole Aslan killing part. Each to their own though eh?

Pantah630 · 10/04/2012 21:54

Definately, when DS, now 12, was in reception he dressed as Saucepan Man for World Book Day, he loved listening to The Faraway Tree stories when little, I'm sure it's the book that inspired his love of reading bet he'd deny it now though

Sarayu · 10/04/2012 22:06

Go for it. My DS is 5 now. We've read both The Faraway Tree and The Wishing Chair. I loved sharing them with him. He wasn't much older than 3.5 when we started. You've got nothing to lose by giving it a try. I think it inspired his reading and writing. Was a very reluctant writer before, wouldn't draw or colour in. Once we'd read The Faraway Tree he was willing to attempt drawing pictures.

PurplePidjin · 11/04/2012 08:33

Quite possibly, MadameHooch, but it's my SIL's decision to make - I just support her Wink

picnicbasketcase · 11/04/2012 08:37

I tried reading War and Peace to my four year old but she just kept jumping on her bed and refused to even try to appreciate the intricate plot. Pah.

PurplePidjin · 11/04/2012 09:01

Tbh, I think the most dn gets out of it is the comfort of a cuddle and a familiar voice. I don't know how much actual content is sinking in but if he feels safe and loved while it happens what's the harm?

madamehooch · 11/04/2012 10:33

Jackie Collins it is then next week Purple:)

PurplePidjin · 11/04/2012 10:36

Only if SIL let's him watch the film/suggests is first

moonblushtomato · 17/04/2012 18:46

Read the Enchanted Wood and then Magic Faraway Tree to DS then age 4.5yo and by halfway through Tree we got a bit bored!!

So started on the Roald Dahls, Chocolate Factory then Twits now James and Giant Peach.

Wonderful and another trip down memory lane just like Blyton.
