DS1 (6 but reading age older) is having a bit of MM moment. He has just finished "Arthur High King of Britain" and "Little Manfred", both consumed in a few gulps. We have had Wreck of the Zanzibar and he didn't get on with it. He is a typical small boy, obsessed with action, heroes etc with a particular penchant for naval history... Had a look at MM on Amazon, but there are so many. He's not particularly into animal stories, so I guess that cuts a lot of them out? Grateful for any suggestion!

Alone on a wide wide sea I think it is called. About z girl who sails from oz to uk. Quite long but v exciting and incorporates lots of different writing genres.

He might like Victory by Susan Cooper - it's about Nelson at Trafalgar, but from the point of view of a small boy on the crew, and a modern girl who sort of time travels/dreams she's him. It's very well done - her King of Shadows is similar but is about Shakespeare, and the boy actually swaps places in time with a young lad who is part of the Globe theatre company.

The marble crusher. It's actually 3 short stories but very boy orientated!

'Not Bad for a Bad Lad' is my favourite MM. Not naval themed but brilliant!

Kensukes Kingdom is very good, about a boy stranded on a desert island. Second Alone on a Wide Wide Sea, it's excellent. We have the audio book too, relistening again at bed time. DS now 12 and into more teenage fiction now but still keeping his Morpurgo collection :)
