She has read:

All of the Roald Dahl
All of the David Walliams
All of the Mr Gum
All of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid
All of the Clarice Bean
Most of Jacqueline Wilsons's
Most of Michael Morpurgo's
Skellig
Ruby Redford

She hasn't managed to "get into":

The How to Train Your Dragon series
The Harry Potter series
The Ingo series

She likes reading and is a capable reader but doesn't like anything too intense. In other words she doesn't push herself too much.

Can anyone make any suggestions which will keep her reading?

I should say that she is still quite young in her mind and not ready for Twilight or similar yet.

:)

bringbacksideburns · 21/03/2012 22:42

My 11 year old has read most of them too.

He is now on the Skullduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy and also enjoys some Agatha Christie, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries.

ColourMeWithChaos · 21/03/2012 22:46

Inkheart trilogy?
I Capture the Castle?
Alex Rider books?
Cherub series?

carrotsandcelery · 22/03/2012 10:35

Thanks everyone. That is a good list to get started on. Smile

BlueChampagne · 22/03/2012 12:50

Dodie Smith "101 Dalmatians"
Susan Cooper "The Dark is Rising"
anything by Joan Aitken ("Wolves of Willoughby Chase" etc)
"The Hobbit"
"What Katie Did" etc
"Heidi"

BlueChampagne · 22/03/2012 12:51

and "Anne of Green Gables"

carrotsandcelery · 22/03/2012 12:53

More great ideas, thank you. She had the audio cd of What Katie Did and loved it.

That has made me wonder if this is about the age for Anne of Green Gables and Little Women? If I leave it much longer I will miss the window won't I?

Eva ibbotson _ star of kazan, journey to the river sea

Hilary MCKAY _ saffy's angel and sequels.

Both brliant, undervalued authors.

Sarah manning _ guitar girl, but maybe a bit to teenagerish.

Takver · 22/03/2012 18:42

I was going to suggest Saffy's Angel et al, I reckon they would definitely suit, ditto Eva Ibbotson. Also the Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence.

Has she read Ballet Shoes, White Boots etc by Noel Streatfield?

I would say Little Women is quite hard going, Anne of Green Gables perhaps an easier read?

Takver · 22/03/2012 18:44

Also, I've been meaning to track down the Cat Royal books which several people have recommended on here, I think the Diamond of Drury Lane is the first one - they might be worth a look.

Leeds2 · 22/03/2012 19:53

Little Princess, Secret Garden. Lost Prince etc by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Anne of Green Gables now has a prequel (sorry, can't remember the author's name, but it was written within the last five years and is called something like Before Green Gables, and details Anne's life before she gets to Green Gables). I work in a children's library, and have recommended Anne to so many girls and they just don't seem to like it. It was always one of my most favouite books! I loved What Katy Did and Little Women too!

You could also try the Family From One End Street by Eve Garnett or Street Child by Berlie Doherty.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is also very popular with this age, if you want something a bit more modern. Or Beswitched by Kate Saunders (this has a recommended reading age of 9+, but does use the f* word once, which some parents are unhappy with). Cathy Cassidy books are also very popular.

carrotsandcelery · 23/03/2012 12:56

Thank you once again everyone. Some brilliant recommendations here and lots of books I had forgotten about.

I loved Anne of Green Gables and Little Women and read them at an age when my dmum still read me a bedtime story and then reread them (several times) when I was a little older. I am 70's child though and she is very different to me so it is hard to judge it.

Thank you for the f word warning Leeds. I know she knows the word but I wouldn't be happy giving her a book with it in it tbh. I don't want to normalise it iykwim.

I love reading children's books myself so I might try some out and then pass them on. I think they would be even more appealing if she thought that was what her mum had been reading too. Grin

The monster garden by Vivien Alcock

Tigresswoods · 23/03/2012 13:04

Judy Blume?

carrotsandcelery · 23/03/2012 13:55

I used to love Judy Blume, especially Tiger Eye (or something like that). I had forgotten about her.

Some I remember and loved, but not yet mentioned:
Carrie's War by Nina BAwden
The Borrowers by Mary Norton
Stig of the Dump by Clive King
Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

I've not read this but it's on my DS's suggested list Yr 5/6:
The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy Boston
books by Eva Ibbottson

ZZZenAgain · 23/03/2012 16:34

my dd has been enoying a series called The Hunchback something

I will have a look

ZZZenAgain · 23/03/2012 16:37

Arthur Slade: The Hunchback Assignments.

No idea what they are about.

Caroline Lawrence: The Roman Mysteries series is good too if she has not read those. Dd is also 11 and she enjoyed those Percy Jackson books.

quirrelquarrel · 23/03/2012 18:07

I always say this, but About a Boy. So funny and clever, perfect for an 11 y.o.

Dancergirl · 01/04/2012 20:51

Nancy Drew
'My Story' books (historical fiction)
Judy Blume
The Penderwicks - Jeanne Birdsall

WidowWadman · 01/04/2012 20:56

Get her some Astrid Lindgren - Ronja Robber's Daughter, The Brothers Lionheart, possibly Pippi Longstocking (although that's a little bit "younger")

WidowWadman · 01/04/2012 21:02

Oh, and Pullmann - "His Dark Materials", and the Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett

carrotsandcelery · 02/04/2012 15:44

I took her to the bookshop yesterday finally (we live in the countryside so it is not a regular thing) and she chose:

Deenie - Judy Blume (she is already on Chp 7 so I take that as a hit)
I Am David
Red Sky In The Morning
Lily Alone - Jacqueline Wilson

I am going to write a list of all the ones recommended here and hunt through our local libraries for them. I know she will love quite a lot of them.

Thank you everyone and keep the ideas coming please.

carrotsandcelery · 02/04/2012 15:50

I meant to say I have also bought a set of Judy Blume's Fudge series from ebay as dd will enjoy them even though they are young for her and ds will probably enjoy them too (he is 7).
