History story books for pre-schoolers

DS is 4 and loves 'Harry and the dinosaurs at the museum'. He asks lots of questions about cave men, Romans, Egyptians etc. which I'm embarrassed to say I can't answer as history is not one of my strong points.

Can anyone recommend a series of history story books for pre-schoolers? I have looked at the Horrible Histories ones but I think we are a few years away from those.

He loves books, loves stories and is like a sponge at the moment.

Ds (who's 4.7) loves Usborne ones. They do some quite small about A5 sized which are very basic and he reads them himself. But the bigger ones with lots of photos he spends hours pouring over, and I read them to him and they often have internet links he enjoys too.

Hard to go wrong with the Usborne ones (DS1 is now 6, but has had the Usborne Encyclopaedia of the Roman Army for about a year and read it obsessively back then; dips in now), also their historical sticker books are a big hit here.
For a different approach, try "the Danger Zone" books, which are more comic-like, but not nearly as irritating as Horrible Histories (neither I nor DS1 like them, so am obv biased!)

Thank you all, sorry I haven't been back sooner. I am going to order some of the Usborne books and see how we go. There are some that I think he will love Grin
