DD is 9 & desperate to read the real thing as it will be the older kids school play this year. She can't quite manage the real version, but we can only find really, really simple (only 60 pages & very big font) stories in Waterstones. Anyone know a simpler, but not babyish version she could try? I'm thinking maybe 100-150 pages long? She has no problem with reading difficult novels (has read several Harry Potters) but struggles with the Shakespearian language!

Try nofearshakespeare.com
It has the Shakespearean language on one side and a modern version on the other.

You can get comic book versions of the Tempest - versions available in levels of complexity from quick (modern) text, plain (modern) text to original (Shakespearian) text. That may be worth looking into?

Hi pugsandseals,
How about the film of The Tempest? I think children's versions of the play tend to be a bit scanty on details. This one with Helen Mirren has had good reviews:

You might be able to order it from your local library for about £2.

We have the Usborne version of The Tempest. But better still is The Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb - my children preferred this and I think it's still in print.

Michael Rosen adapted it for children on stage. It might be worth having a look at his website to find out more - and it might lead you to some recommended versions.
