For ds, he's 12. His teacher thinks that it will help his comprehension. Danke Smile

Try asking in the Languages/Bilingualism section (under Being a Parent) - lots of German speakers there (in fact there's a thread on German children's books at the moment).

Maybe try something he's familiar with in English - Asterix, Tintin (Tim & Struppi) or Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Greg's Tagebuch)?

Ah, I didnt know there was a languages section. Blush That's a good idea SecretSpi, I'll have a look on Amazon Smile

That's quite difficult because anything that's likely to be easy to read will also be quite childish thematically. And the more advanced teenage fiction tends to be long and complex - things like Cornelia Funke books (wrote the 'Ink' series), or Michael Ende (wrote Never-Ending Story among other things).

I would actually agree with SecretSpi about taking English books in translation, and something like Asterix or another comic is easier to read. My kids love Gregs Tagebuch and it wouldn't necessarily be too childish for a 12yo. If he's read Harry Potter in English he could have a stab at the German versions (and laugh at Hermione being called Hermine). DD1 did that when learning French - she read the French Charlie and the Chocolate factory and it helped that she knew the plot.

What about a non-fiction book about a subject he's interested in or a hobby? There's a series of books like the Eyewitness series called Was ist Was with lots of pictures but also a fair bit of text, about football or horses or castles or whatever. He might have fun looking round the website as well.

In Germany there are lots of bilingual easy reader books aimed at teenagers - literally part of the text is in German and part in English. it's aimed at German learners of English, but there's no reason it wouldn't work the other way round. I can't remember the name of the series though.

Hmm, he's an excellent reader. He's read all of the Harry Potter books, read the first one when he was 5 or 6. He likes warhammer.

Erich Kastner, Emil and the Detectives (don't want to put the German title because I'll get it wrong) and any others by him.

Might get some good recommendations here as well - the thread for people living in Germany and Austria www.mumsnet.com/Talk/living_overseas/1351171-Wenn-es-im-Winter-st-rmt-und-schneit-haben-wir-eine-Flasche-Gl-hwein-allzeit-bereit-life-in-Germany-and-Austria
