My SIL is getting my nephew a play kitchen for his 2nd birthday. I am planning to give him some play food, a chef's apron & hopefully some fantastic books about cooking or food.

Can anyone recommend some suitable books for this age? I was thinking maybe the Gingerbread Man or the Enormous Pancake or maybe something by Lois Ehlert. It would be great to find a real keeper IYKWIM. My mind has gone blank, I'd love to hear which books your kids have loved.

Thanks!

Usbourne do some great cookery books for children of various ages. You could look on their website for some of those.

My first thought was A birthday cake for Little Bear which is a lovely story (and even has the recipe for the cake baked in the story at the back of the book). Sadly it looks like it is out of print, though.

Kipper's Birthday also features cake making, but not so much the process, IYKWIM, (but would be ideal age wise for a 2 y/o).

Thank you both. I had planned to get an Usbourne cookbook but the age-appropriate one seems to be out of stock.

Will check out Kipper.

Thanks again.

not sure of availability where you are, but there is a book called The Witch in the Cherry Tree by Margaret Mahy- it is about a boy and his mum who bake cupcakes and a witch tries to con them into handing some over (not scary). Has a recipe for gingerbread witches at the back.

Sounds good, thanks twolittlebundles .

Maisy makes gingerbread is simple but has had us cooking with the book open watching maisy cook too and discussing ingredients. We made a lot of gingerbread!

'Spot bakes a cake' and a lovely one called, I think, 'Sophie's cake'. DD is cake obsessed so chooses these two from the library a lot!

Oooh Sophie's cake?! I've got a Sophie ...will have to look out for that!

'Sophie bakes a cake' - Tina Burke. My 2yo finds it hilarious...!
