The Conch Bearer by Chitra Banarjee Divakaruni is mystical and magical. Age range around 9-12years I should think.

Books by Narinder Dhami.

There is also the Bollywood Babes trilogy. Can't remember the author, and may be senior school rather than junior. It is a long time sice I read them!

Rudyard Kipling?

spendthrift · 17/02/2012 12:16

Agree Kipling. The jungle books cover much more than just the mowgli stories and are pretty sympathetic. Kim - as long as you explain a bit about the background, but probably a bit older.

Depends on how mature a reader she is for Rumer Godden: the peacock spring maybe a bit later but black narcissus? Is it The River that Jean renoir made a film of - the sad one ? in due course.

and it only begins in India, but the secret garden - the description of making gardens in the sand is so convincing and the contrasts so great.

BrigitBigKnickers · 17/02/2012 12:23

The first part of The Secret Garden is set in India

God of Small Things? How about some Tagore short stories,www.amazon.co.uk/Oxford-Illustrated-Childrens-Tagore-Collection/dp/0195684176/ref=sr_1_10?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1329486766&sr=1-10 here they are very simply written and I remember reading them at 8 or 9 even though I'm sure I didn't understand them properly!
Indian myths and legends? RK Narayan's versions for Penguin Classics very readable. Also Sarwat Chaddha has a new series coming out, the Ash Mistry Chronicles I think?

Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie is a beautiful book for all ages. I think I was about 11 when I read and loved The Far Pavilions. I've not read it since so it might be both unsuitable and terrible.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
