What book after Molesworth?

DD who is 11 years old have just finished reading my old battered copy of Molesworth and REALLY enjoyed it.In fact it is underneath her pillow as she is off to sleepGrin. She has read all the diary of wimpy kid books in the past. She is a voracious reader but was a bit put off by the power of five by Anthony Horowitz and started having nightmares and difficulty in going to sleep. Although she is quite capable of reading challenging text she is not really mature to handle complex issues etc., Molesworth has been really good and she is started reading again for pleasure. What do I get her next (something lighthearted, funny) - Three men in a boat? may be a bit old in language..

1066 & all that - although she probably wouldn't get a lot of the historical allusions

the authors wrote several others including one called And Now All This which is equally silly but in a more general way

also there are sequels to Molesworth, eg Back in the Jug Agane Smile

I just bought my nephew a book called Grimble which is by Clement Freud. It's out of print but quite cheap on Amazon. I think it's got a similar vibe to Molesworth and is just fun. I also love the idea of Three Men in a Boat. Wonder if she would also like Diary of a Nobody which is lighthearted and amusing and a good crossover to adult books.

Betty MacDonald? Hmmm, maybe a bit young.

Has she tried Joan Aiken? Necklace of Raindrops, More than a Few?

I think Diary of a Nobody is a brilliant idea.

My first exposure to it was the painting the bath red sequence which was extracted in one of my reading books at primary school. My dad found me laughing at it and informed me that there was actually a whole book of it and fetched it for me from the shelf. He went up a long way in my estimation at that point Smile

How about P.G. Wodehouse? I loved the Jeeves and Wooster books at that age; start with Carry on Jeeves and Very Good Jeeves because they're short stories.

Re 3 Men In a Boat - don't forget it ends with them finding the body of a drowned young woman.

It's interesting to hear she has been having trouble sleeping after some of the things she's been reading. I read a lot of YA fiction and it strikes me they seem to have a very high body count and writers think nothing of wiping out quite major characters; Kevin Brook's Road of the Dead has killing after killing and Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines (which you often find in children rather than teen sections fgs!) wipes out a couple of the main characters and a few entire cities....

Oh yes My family & other animals is great. I think I read it at about that age. I still remember him describing his sister's acne as like a faceful of red porridge Shock.

Also how about Diary of Adrian Mole. Still fun after all these years.

She has read Mortal Engines and was not disturbed. The Power of five is about supernatural powers and obviously did not get on with in. I will try the diary of nobody and Adrian Mole.
