Classic Children's Storybooks

Hi. I was wondering if any of you would be able to recommend good story books for babies? My daughter is only just 10wks but I wanted to start doing a bed time story each night and thought I'd build up a collection of books that I can read to her.

I realise she's not going to appreciate the stories at the moment, but suggestions for books she may enjoy as she grows would be gladly received!

I tried searching Amazon, one of the suggestions for age 0-2 was 'My First Crossword Puzzle' Hmm, I thought perhaps I'd get better answers here!

Thanks for any suggestions!

The very hungry caterpillar
The gruffalo
Where the wild things are
Giraffes can't dance

Once you've searched for these on amazon, more suggestions will come up I'm sure. But don't forget to look in charity shops, boot sales, school fairs and nct nearly new sales to get bargains. Also visit your library - no late fees or damage fees for children under 5.

When she's older and you're looking for stories without pictures: the borrowers, the secret garden, the railway children, Matilda.

I hope you know about the bookstart scheme? Take your red health record book to your local library and you will receive two free baby books.

She might not appreciate the stories yet but she will love listening to your voice and cuddling up.

There are BILLIONS of great children's books. I second charity shops. One of DS's favourite is called Beans on Toast and it cost my 25p from Oxfam!

And my local library does a children's card that means DS can have his very own books, and there are no fees if they are late back or get damaged.

Some of our favourites are:

The Cat in the Hat
The Lorax
Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?
Mr Brown Can Moo
The Gruffalo
Room On The Broom
The Smartest Giant In Town
A Squash and a Squeeze
The Very Hungry Catapiller
The Very Quiet Cricket
Brown Bear, Brown Bear
The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark
The Night Pirates
Girrafes Can't Dance
No Matter What
Heaven's Having You
Voices In The Park

I could go on forever. I'm a childminder so I have a lot of children's books!

Thanks for your suggestions. I've had a very enjoyable evening looking through your suggestions on Amazon & buying some books for the collection.

I'll have to look into the bookstart scheme, I didn't know it existed!

Dear Zoo

anything by Julia Donaldson
The MAisy books by Lucy Cousins

Yes, 'Dear Zoo' is great. You must have 'Peepo' by Janet and Alan Ahlberg. Little bit old for your baby at the moment, but will come into its own. A classic.

babyocho · 17/12/2011 21:43

Totally agree with Peeop. DD got it for her 1st birthday and is almost 4 now. Stopped reading it for a while but picked it up again the other night, it's such a well illustrated book - DD is now starting to see things that she never saw before despite having read it loads of times.

The "That's not my..." series is good for very little children. It's touch and feel and the books tend to be brightly coloured and attractive - and also v sturdy so you don't worry about them grabbing it.

suzikettles · 17/12/2011 21:47

And I would argue that they're now classics in that, if you say to anyone with a child over the age of 2 "That's not my..." they will inevitably complete the sentence - it's like a reflex Grin

That's not my mumsnet... it's AIBUs are too reasonable

AmandinePoulain · 17/12/2011 21:52

Anything by Julia Donaldson is lovely because they are rhymes, which probably sound nice to a baby's ears.

Guess How Much I Love You

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

The Hairy Maclary series

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Six Dinner Sid

Mog books

Ask what schemes they do at your library, ours does a thing where you get a stamp on a card when you take books out and 5 stamps gets you a free book and certificate, we've done it several times Smile
