Books for 6 year old boy

I'm looking for a couple of good books for my 6 year old nephew for Christmas. He's almost 7. I don't think he reads much by himself - are books with pictures still okay or something more like Charlie and the chocolate factory? Thanks

I've just bought my nearly 7 yo a horrid Henry book, He doesn't read much himself either but he's quite liking it.

books with pictures definitely, unless he's quite an advanced reader.
Very nice picture books great, really, something with more detailed & complicated drawings.
Fact books, too, anything he's into.

my boys (5 and 6) love Hannah Shaw's books.

Still picture book format, lots of interesting drawings (the sort where you find new details every time you read the book) but a bit more text to read and some subversive humour. Also lots of captions and labels on diagrams in the books, so even if an adult is reading, there's bits you can ask the child to read alongside.

how much do you want to spend? Do you want something he can read to himself or for someone else to read to him?

My 6 year old likes Horrid Henry. The newer versions come with lots of pictures. He also likes Winnie the Witch. Great pictures really detailed. There are picture books which have a reasonable amount of text which we enjoy. There are also longer story books, but I think these have few pictures. Have ordered some for this Christmas.

Usbourne also do good range of fact books in a wide range of subjects. last year I bought my son books about London, Fire Fighters, Cowboys and Pirates all have been well read.

Roald Dahl are all winners with my ds (6). He loves reading to himself and being read to. Also fact books, as previously posted, Usbourne are very good books.
Also Percy the Parkkeeper stories are good as there is usually "something to do" on the last page.
If you know what he is in to then you could gear the book choices around that. May encourage him to read more himself

My 6 year old loved the magic treehouse books they sell them in packs of 4 on Amazon. Proper chapter books with a picture every couple of pages and short chapters so a real sense of achievement. Also enjoyed Dinosaur Cove to read to himself.

We started ds off with comic-book style books to read. If he likes Ben10, there are some good comic book style retellings of the stories.
Dinosaur Cove is good too, not too text heavy.

U could try a new series of books, available on amazon but cheaper from www.haroldtheplatypus.co.uk. There are two that are good for boys, Harold on safari and Harold in space
