Any ideas? Something not too obvious/popular if possible as she's (it's a christmas gift) got a million and one books already so I'm hoping for something she won't have. Don't want to spend much as it's a top up pressie so hoping for a cheap deal on amazon or wherever - not asking for much am I Wink Grin

would the jacqueline wilson annual 2012 be too young for her do you think?

She's between my girls, so I'll list some of the things they like:
Dd1 (just 11yo): Alex Rider, Narnia, Roman Mysteries, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys, Three Investigators, Joan Aiken

Dd2 (just 8 yo): Jacqueline Wilson, Famous Five/Find outers, Swallows and Amazon series, Anne Frank's Diary, Monica Edwards (mostly out of print except GGBP) other Girls own stuff from GGBP esp Gwendoline Courtney, Elizabeth Goudge

Some less well known ones that my dd (9yrs) has enjoyed recently:

Fly by Night and the sequel Twilight Robbery (Frances Hardinge)
The Snow Spider trilogy by Jenny Nimmo (this is lovely, but I haven't seen it referred to much at all)
Atticus the Storyteller's 100 Greek Myths (good if she is a Percy Jackson fan)

Jacqueline Wilson annual - depends whether she is a fan. My dd isn't, so it wouldn't appeal to her at all.

A classic like Black Beauty, or 101 Dalmatians (Dodie Smith not Disney)?
The Green Knowe series?
Second Joan Aiken and Elizabeth Goudge (esp The Little White Horse).

What are her interests?

Crusade in jeans by Thea Beckman is very good and finally translated in English ( film was out earlier). My favorite childhood book.

The Geranimo Stilton books are currrently a big hit in our house. They have smell cards inside the books plus little riddles& puzzles for them to sort out so they can then read on.

I love those Takva. I also liked the one by her about a girl called Diana, something to do with griffins I think.

Ella Enchanted is good, sort of a re-writing of Cinderella.

Or Tales of the Dark Forest are superb. Ever so funny with fantastic characters (Humphrey Boggart, Luigi the Pastafarian, a talking harp...)
