Recommendations for independent reading, Y2

Hi,
my daugher is in Y2 and has finally started reading independently at night following the discovery of the Rainbow Fairies books. Before that she would not read anything independently, we struggled to find anything - we tried the Darcey Bussell Ballerina books, the Sophie books, the more advanced ORT books, Roald Dahl - all of those she found too difficult to read on her own but the Rainbow Fairies books were perfect and her confidence has grown hugely. Still she picked up one of the Sophie books the other day and she said they were still too difficult as the writing was "too crowded".

Anyone could suggest a "next step" after the Rainbow Fairies books?

She is on white at school if that helps with an appropriate recommendations -
Thanks!!!

Don't know about book bands, but books at a similar level to Rainbow Fairies & still with loads of pictures that my dd enjoyed:

My Secret Unicorn series
Anna Hibiscus series
Winnie the Witch chapter books (actually maybe easier in reading terms than Rainbow magic, but more varied in plot!)

My DD really loves the Usborne Young Reading Series 2 and 3.

Trying to encourage my dd in this too, so far she's read a bit of the Tiara Club series, (think they're quite similar to rainbow fairies). Not sure if it's their designated intention but all the words we've come across so far seem to be phonetic, which is intentional.

I'm dying to know what the girl equivalent of beast quest & horrid Henry are (not that girls can't read these, I just would like to know what books girls are really excited about)!

Whoops which is helpful (must try to multitask less)!

bonsoir (hi!) - where did you get your usbourne readers in France? Or did you order them? They look really pricey on their site when you factor in postage as well and I can't find any box sets.

I've just bought Bad Cat, Good Cat by Lynne Reid Banks which looks good for that stage. (She wrote the Indian in the Cupboard series a while ago, but this one has only just come out).

jamaisjedors - order them through Book Depository for free worldwide delivery (I live in the Czech Republic).

In fact "Bears" (the one which DD is currently reading - from the First Reading series) is only £3.91 on Book Depository compared to £4.99 on Amazon, which is good because BD is sometimes a little more expensive (although the free postage makes up for the difference).

Bad news, though, that Amazon's takeover of BD has finally been given approval.

Batthersea Dogs and Cats Home Books by Sarah Hawkins. Each book is called the name of a dog, such as Max's Story, Snowy's story etc. Ellen Miles does a similar series called Puppy Place, each book also called by the name of a dog eg Goldie, Pugsley.

Thanks vesela for both your messages - it's true I often forget about the book depository (and go for Amazon).
