Just seen this on the R4 website and listened here Really good programme with Vam McDermid and I could answer ALL the quiz questions - mostly quicker than her experts. Experts? Pah!

I heard it too. The questions weren't really meant to be hard were they?

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 03/11/2011 20:17

How exciting - I'm off!

Northernlurker · 03/11/2011 20:23

I can think of much harder ones!

What was the name of Joey's house in Guernsey?

In which book does Frau Eisen appear?

What does Deira come down with after falling through the ice?

OP posts:
DeWe · 03/11/2011 21:24

The first one is Les Rosiers, though I'm not sure of the spelling. Should there be an accent on it?

Frau Eisen... was she the spy when they were hiding the Peace League. She had a son.. Norman/Herman, something like that? If so it would be "In exile"?

Deira. She's the one who falls out with Grizel in Head Girl and burns her grandmother's letter, and later hits Grizel in the snowball fight. I don't recall her falling though the ice at all, unless she goes through with Joey and Maureen (?) in Rivals. Joey gets pluro-pneumonia (as usual) and Maureen gets something like rhumatic (can't spell it) fever which we later learn (in Chalet girl from Kenya) effected her heart and she dies fairly young.

How many marks do I get?

Northernlurker · 03/11/2011 21:47

You get top marks - for spotting the red herring. Deira and Maureen got on v well because of similar backgrounds.

Deira and Grizel run what business in New Zealand?

Where did Joey meet Erica's mother?

Who falls over the edge in the Flower Valley?

Who dies on Bernhilda's wedding day?

Which mistresses go on the not very successful trip to the Stubai glacier (the whole trip not the specific expedition)

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 03/11/2011 21:47

It was Hermann - maybe Von Eisen?

OP posts:
DeWe · 03/11/2011 22:47

Hmm. Getting harder.

Deira and Grizel run a music book shop. I remember being slightly surprised Grizel wanted to stick with music. i think an outward bound place would have suited her better.

I think Joey met Erica's mother in India. Erica then recognises Joey across the street in London as her never-seen-before guardian Hmm. I think that's right. I haven't read the book, just remember the back story.

I'm going to take a punt on Anne Seymour falling in New House after Joey's been sulking about her not being respectful enough, so Joey can rescue her (again). Didn't it stop Anne from being Head girl or something? If it's not it might be Emerence Hope in Kenya when she was gathering moss.

Bernhilda's Grossmutter (Grandmother). Only one I'm certain of.

That must be where Eustacia pulls Bill over. So Miss Wilson must be there, and I'll guess Miss Steward/Stewart (can't remember which spelling) as I think Miss Maynard had left at that point, so there's not many options of mistresses that would go up a glacier.

Any harder and I'll get stuck. I've only got some of the paperbacks!

Northernlurker · 03/11/2011 23:04

Very good! Grin

Ok......

Le Petit Chalet is renamed what after the building of the Middles Chalet?

What is the profession of Juliet's fiancee/husband?

Which pantomime is performed by the finishing branch in Switzerland during their first term out there? (Impossible unless you've read that book)

What is the name of the yacht that Joey and co use to escape Guernsey?

What is the name of Joey's FIRST heroine - not the published one. The lead character in the first book that she attempts but doesn't finish.

OP posts:
DeWe · 04/11/2011 11:10

Le Petite Chalet was St. Agnes as "the best known of the child saints".

He was a Lawyer/solicitor I think. Not sure, I remember it being referred to at some point that he had to get up the job a bit before he could support Juliet, and I vaguely got the impression it was something to do with law.

I'm guessing it was Sleeping Beauty, on the basis I don't have the book, and it's a pantomime they refer to having done, but I haven't read about it.

Sea Witch: I remember that easily as the same name as Malcolm Saville's "Sea Witch comes home".

Malvina, and the baddy was Rosetta. I think that's the right way round, because it always sounded the wrong way round to me.

EmpressOfTheRomanCandles · 04/11/2011 12:17

Thanks for that Northernlurker, just listened. I did better than I expected on the quiz questions - but wasn't it Sybil who wanted to go to the Kensington School of Needlework while Daisy wanted to be a doctor? Or did Daisy want it too & then change her mind?

Northernlurker · 04/11/2011 12:37

Yes Sybil definately wanted to do that. i think they got muddled because Sybil was Jem's daughter and Daisy his niece. She did become a doctor, winning a prize and all but then when the babies come along she seems to stop practicing and annoyingly defers to all the male relatives when anything medical comes up Hmm

Dewe - top marks once again Grin Donal O'Hara was a barrister.

Some more:

What present do the Chalet girls give the Bishop when he opens the sale of work in Tyrol?

What does Thekla bring to the midnight feast?

Who is Games Prefect when Len is Head Girl?

What accident causes Miss Bubb to arrive at the Chalet School?

(Please say if you're bored with the quiz - I think you have the same sort of memory for this kind of thing as I do!)

OP posts:
EmpressOfTheRomanCandles · 04/11/2011 13:04

First one's a fountain pen - Frieda admired her uncle's fine, clear writing & he told her that he always used a very fine nib.

Don't know the next two.

Were Miss Annersley & Miss Wilson in a train accident?

Also, do you know about <a class="break-all" href="http://www.the-cbb.co.uk/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this?

Pascha · 04/11/2011 13:08

A fountain pen

Uncooked smoked bacon

Isn't it Margot?

They were in a bus accident. The driver was killed I think.

My inner geek has woken Grin

DeWe · 04/11/2011 13:50

Yes, I agree with Pascha.

Thin nibbed fountain pen.

Uncooked bacon, surprised she wasn't the sick one rather than Joyce.

Margo's the games pree, Ted's Grantley's second pree and Con's magazine editor.

Bus accident, Miss Edwards and Mme de Lachenais were there too. I think they were coming back from holiday in Cornwall, somewhere on the south coast anyway.

I lurk on the cbb message board. Am amused to find lots of other people who share my view on Joey!!!!! Grin There was someone who referred to mumsnet a months or two ago (I think they were pg) . Was it you?

notcitrus · 04/11/2011 14:28

Thekla had smoked bacon, a bit like parma ham, just too much of a novelty for Joyce + co!
What is a bilious attack, anyway? Gallstones?

Margot is Games pree to Len, Con is a prefect and editor of the Chaletian.

Miss Bubb arrives after a bus accident kills the driver and keeps Misses Annersley and Wilson in hospital for ages - can't remember if Miss Edwards makes it back for term. I think Mlle de Lachenais was relatively unscathed.

Northernlurker · 04/11/2011 18:48

Very good all round!

It's Miss Wilson who comes back rapidly - even with broken leg. 'Teddy' and Mademoiselle are less badly injured but skiving and Miss Annersley nearly dies.

Ok.........

What is the name of Miss Wilson's sister?

Who or what is Richenda visiting when she has her 'bad accident'?

What is the name of the Bettany (Dick Bettany branch) home after they return from India?

What is the name of Simone's oldest child?

What does Grizel run away to see whilst on her way back to the Tyrol?

OP posts:
PotteringAlong · 04/11/2011 18:59

Was Simone's oldest child Anne-Claire? I know she had 2 girls and 2 boys but it's the only name I can remember!

Will listen to the programme - thanks for the link!

Pascha · 04/11/2011 19:11

Cherry as thingy - Jacynth! names her cello after it?

Richenda was at the dentist when a horrible little boy squirted ammonia or something in her eyes (I think)

The Bettany home is The Quadrant

Simones oldest child is ... erm ... will come back to that

I wanted to say Reichenbach falls but thats Sherlock Holmes. Munchausen, Schaffhausen? Anyway its some waterfall in switzerland.

Pascha · 04/11/2011 19:11

Therese - Tessa! Named after Mlle wotsit who died.

Pascha · 04/11/2011 19:13

(it has possibly been some time since I last read my books Blush)

DeWe · 04/11/2011 19:35

Yes Cherry,
Dentist
The Quadrant
Therese (with lots of accents but I don't know how to do it) de Bersac, called after Mademoiselle
The Falls of/at Schaffhausen

EmpressOfTheRomanCandles · 04/11/2011 19:37

I was sure they were going to talk about Nancy Wilmot and Kathy Ferrars after the Sapphism reference, but no...

Not me DeWe, wonder who it was?

DeWe · 04/11/2011 20:24

It was in a thread about names I think, with a couple of suggestions for AIBU for Chalet School people.

DeWe · 04/11/2011 20:24

Found it:
www.the-cbb.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9793&start=0

Northernlurker · 04/11/2011 20:28

Once again full marks - these questions are either too easy or we've all spent too much time with our nose in Chalet School books!

What was Mrs Embury's maiden name?

What was the name of the expedition that Mary Lou's father was on when he was killed?

Name three of the mountains/alpes surrounding the Tiernsee

Who played Snow White in the Fairy Tale Sale of Work?
