Could I please have some ideas of books to read to DS2 that move on from the picture book, to more chapter type books. So far, we have only read Roald Dahl ie. The Enormous Crocodile, Fantastic Mr Fox and are currently reading James and the Giant Peach.

He isnt quite ready for books with just writing but prefers the odd picture every other page or so - even if its just a sketch.

Thank you.

These are ones that I have read to my son recently.

Stig of the Dump
Charlotte's Web
All the other Roald Dahl books.
Secret Seven by Enid Blyton
The Enchanted Wood series by Enid Blyton (I thought my son wouldn't really like it but he loved it)
The books by Jeremy Strong.

The how to train your dragon books are fantastic - lots of drawings and doodles on the pages, exciting stories with actually perilous adventures. There are quite a few though how to train your dragon is the first (worth reading in order as charcters return and previous adventures are mentioned). Nothing like the film, the only thing they have in common are a couple of character names - e.g. the dragon in question in the books is pocketsized and generally as moody and troublesome as can be. Very 'british' sense of humour and no wasting time on romantic notions. I think they are by Cressida Cowell. I genuinely do think they are some of the best childrens books written since Roald Dahl.

My ds also loves the appalling 'spy dog' series. I believe they have also know brought out 'spy pups' They are fucking awful though.

My DS enjoyed the Beast Quest series, The Magic Faraway Tree series, Michael Morpurgo's The Butterfly Lion & Roald Dahl.

Definitely How to Train your Dragon
Astrosaurs are good, and IIRC they have plenty of pictures
The No. 1 Car Spotter series is also good and definitely lots of illustrations (and not too long which I found quite good in early chapter books)

Thank you for all the ideas. Will try the How to Train Your Dragon series as he loved the film and loves anything to do with dragons. Will have a look at the Beastquest as well.

I did suggest The Magic Faraway Tree to him as DS1 enjoyed this (but might have been a little older actually when we read it) but it didnt have enough pictures! I will have a look at the the Enchanted Wood series though.

Thanks again.
