Books for 5yo to have at home?

I will start by admitting that I am rather ignorant when it comes to books Blush. I can't remember the last time I read a book.

I have a 5yo DS and would like him to enjoy reading books. I used to buy him books as a toddler (like "That's not my..." and suchlike) but since he started school (he is now in Y1), he has been bringing reading scheme books home and I have not actually done any other reading with him. He does enjoy the stories in the ORT books. I think his reading is reasonable for his age (ORT level 4). What sort of books do Y1 boys read - I am really clueless as to where to start?

to read himself or have read to him?

my 5yo loves gruffalo, stick man, cat in the hat, anything rhyming

and anythingwith stories about farting/knights/dragons etc

any books are good books tbh, ds loves listening to me reading dd rainbow magic books (about fairies)

as long as you're reading something/letting him read something he'll love it

or get yourself to a charity shop with a good kids section and grab up a load, see what he likes best then you have a basis

Go to your local library. Join if you havent already. See what sort of things he likes. Bring a load home to look at and read (by himself and you read to him)

Then visit the library every few weeks to get more books - you will soon get a feel for what sort of thing he likes.

Then you could buy him some for christmas :)
But also check out charity shops as they are fab for cheap books. Look for some for you too - if your ds sees you reading he is much more likely to want to read himself

At that age there still have to be pictures on every single page.

Aliens love underpants - there is no child who does not love this.
Dr Seuss red backs for silly rhymes

Agree dragons/dinosaurs

Usborne lift the flap books on huge range of topics.

The book people also do a great discount on books and have suggested age ranges for your help plus some are reviewed by mum's / dads
