she is book mad, has read about 50+ books in the last month :o

But she is mad on horses and a lot of them are horse books, which is fine, she will read wimpy kid and some others, but I would like her to try some different ones

Her spelling and reading/writing is fab at school and I am sure her book reading has contributed to that. I can't really see her reading the likes of the Railway children and Anne of Green Gables, although I try!! so would like some suggestions of books that have a bit more to them, but she will like the look of

She won't even read Black Beauty!!

I have thought of Michael Morpurgo?

thanks

Ooh ooh, Ursula Le Guin, Earthsea books. I think I wax about that age when I first found them.

In answer to your op, I have to share my fave book ever, from my childhood

A Stable For Jill. I know it's horsey, but its a great book. It was one of my mum's fave too.

The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips by Michael Morpurgo is great, ( set near where i live!)

Also, my dd9, recommends Jacqueline Wilson, Bed and Breakfast Star esp, and The Warrior Cats book series.

T.H White - The Once and Future King. Lots of stuff going on in that one, and a really interesting tke on the Arthus legend. I second Diana Wynne Jones too. Oh, and what about Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series?

'wax' Hmm

Obviously 'was'...

There's a wonderful series of 4 books by Helen Dunmore - Ingo. DS was lent the first one by a teacher, raced through it and bought the others with his own money. I had a read myself and they are brilliant.

Loved Judy Bloom as a kid, i had all the point horror books too for abit of trashy reading :)

mankyscotslass · 22/10/2011 21:26

Susan Cooper, "the Dark is Rising" series

Alan Garners books, "the Weirdstone of Brisingamen", "the Moon of Gomrath"

LLoyd Alexander "Chronicles of Prydain" series

I also loved at that age all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books - Pioneers across the mid west of America.

And although I was not a girli girl,I loved all the Lousia M Allcott Books about Jo...so Little Women Right through the series to Jo's boys.

I was weaned off pony books by the Flambards stories.

Also, shamelessly nicking an idea from another thread, Rumer Godden's The Diddokoi might be worth tracking down.

Has she read Lionboy by Zizou Corder? I just read it and really like it. Also enjoying the Cat royal adventure series by Julia Golding and the "Dead wicked" books by Debbie Gliori.

All recommended to me by year 5 and 6 girls .
I adored Monica Edwards books at that age ( and still do) . Can recommend Little house on parie series ( my 9-12 yr old neices like them lots) Also the Diceys song/ solitary blue series.

AT that age, DD loved Roman Mysteries. She read them one after the other, I even had to buy her the quiz books and stuff to go with them.

Also Vampirates, Skulduggery Pleasant, Percy Jackson, Nancy Drew, Lauren St. John.

My favourite book at that age was "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. My son read it recently (my tatty old Puffin copy) and loved it too!

I also loved the 'Flambards' books when I was in the 'everything about horses' phase. Good to see so many of my childhood favourite books are still so popular; can't wait until our daughter starts reading them.

'England is Truly a Magical Place', by Karl Woodbury is a book your DD might enjoy. Written in rhyming couplets, it tells the story of Jenny and Lenny as they fly around England discovering and learning all about England's people and places; lots of fun and full of interesting snipits of history and geography. There's also an audio cd with the book too. (This book was written by my husband.)
