I'm a soft moo - Once There Were Giants sets me off every time.

OP posts:

The Robot and the Bluebird.
No Matter What
Alfie and the Birthday Present

ASByatt · 25/09/2011 21:49

BeerTricks - oh yes, Mole and the Baby Bird!!!!

I remember we had it out from the library and had to hide it because it made me sob uncontrollably!! There's a section that goes something like this: -

And because Mole loved the bird so much, he let it go and watched it fly away.
And because Mole loved the bird so much, he sat and cried.....

Stick man.

God, it kills me but I love it.

suzikettles · 25/09/2011 21:51

Dogger. It's got a happy ending, but when the sister does "a VERY kind thing" my voice just goes.

Ds won't let me read it any more. He says it's too sad. I don't think he listens past the page where Dogger gets sold.

and Peepo
and Mousehole Cat.

Greenshadow · 25/09/2011 21:55

Owl Babies

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/09/2011 21:55

So glad you started this thread Pretty Candles, it reminded me of I Love You Forever and I looked it up on Amazon. Bought a new copy for less than £4.00 with free post. Which has cheered me up no end as I only have about a fiver in the bank.

Thank you.

Feeling a bit weepy just reading this thread.
I cry at adverts, kids movies, even particularly moving episodes of the Simpsons.

This emotional incontinence has definately got worse since having kids.

VenetiaLanyon · 25/09/2011 21:56

Agree re Once There Were Giants and Peepo.

Also, try The Big Big Sea if you dare..

madamehooch · 25/09/2011 22:02

Another vote for Dogger and the Big Big Sea.

The bit that always sets me off in Dogger is when he tries to tell the lady that it's his Dogger but she doesn't understand him. FGS - IT'S HIS DOGGER!!

Now oddly ds was absolutely fine with Goodbye Mog (me not so much).

So it's clearly ok for our cat to shuffle off this mortal coil - hopefully not too imminently - but the idea of his favourite soft toy being sold by mistake at a school fair is to much to be borne Hmm

Our cat's pretty scratchy to be fair. There's not a massive amount of love lost there.

DownyEmerald · 25/09/2011 22:07

Dogger
Bog Baby
Tatty Ratty
I must try Once There Were Giants

Peepo - I love but it doesn't make me cry..
Ditto Elephant and Bad Baby - interested to know what it is in those books that makes others cry?

I've noticed that the ones that get me haven't been dd's favourites (exception of Tatty Ratty I think). I don't know if its the sadness that turns her off or if the writing is just less appealing to her than it is to me....

FrenchLimeBlossom · 25/09/2011 22:09

Peepo, Guess how much I love you, Gorilla and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes - currently DS's favourites and i well up every time. In fact Guess how much I love you made me cry in Waterstones when i was PG.

Never read Goodbye Mog and I think I will have to wait til DS is old enough to read it himself.

The Northern Lights trilogy made me weep like a child.

Grumpla · 25/09/2011 22:11

Oh Dogger SadSadSad

My sister and I sometimes take it in turns to read it to each other and see who cries first (we are in our thirties...)

In fact sometimes when we have had many a few pints we just put on a sad face and whisper "Dogger...." in mournful tones to set the other one off.

Waltraut · 25/09/2011 22:11

I Love you Forever - read a copy at a friend's house way before I had children, and it upset me so much I vowed never ever to have it in the house. It's made me cry just seeing the title and remembering. (I am not that weird normally!)

The Green Ship
Zagazoo (just love it that the parents are pelicans, hope that's not a spoiler)
Goodnight Moon just because I read it at a time when I probably had PND.

Francagoestohollywood · 25/09/2011 22:22

Oh yes!
I still remember sobbing at: The trouble with Mum (babette Cole)

HumphreyCobbler · 25/09/2011 22:25

The Toymaker by Martin Waddel

"And she made it with love, for she had not forgotten....."

rushofbloodtothefeet · 25/09/2011 22:28

I'm glad someone has already mentioned Owl Babies

We also have a book called 'I'm Sorry' by Sam McBratney, with beautiful illustrations, that always sets me off.

pozzled · 25/09/2011 22:30

Once There Were Giants- what a great book.

Guess How Much I Love You

No Matter What by Debi Gliori

Ponders · 25/09/2011 22:31

yes, Dogger
& the last Mog book
& Charlotte's Web

& others which I can't think of atm

DD1 is a secondary English teacher now & has to read aloud sometimes - obv books like Dogger aren't part of the syllabus Grin but still, she struggles with things like Of Mice & Men, & To Kill a Mockingbird

How do actors do it? Can they switch off?

Ponders · 25/09/2011 22:32

The Story of Holly & Ivy is another

stinkyfluffycat · 25/09/2011 22:33

Bloody 'Goodbye Mog' actually made me cry in the middle of the sodding children's library. Had to pick up the child to hide my face in and scuttle out of the door.
