it's a long shot...

DD says it's about a boy who stays with relatives for the summer. He meets someone called Hunter who lives in a big house on a hill near the same village. The boy goes into Hunter's shed and it's like a maze and on the other side of the maze there's a magical world with elves and goblins and stuff.

The book cover has got silouettes of houses and trees against an orange sky.

If you get this then truly mn is awesome

Doesn't ring any bells I'm afraid, I tried googling and nothing. Abebooks have an awesome space for finding books called Booksleuth. They seem to be able to find most things and easy to buy it off them as well!

HerdOfTinyElephants · 10/08/2011 08:25

(But if I were you I'd post on the abebooks.com BookSleuth as well as the UK one -- the .com seems to get more traffic.

AlmaMartyr · 10/08/2011 08:36

Ah, good point HerdofTinyElephants, I think I've posted on abebooks.com instead before for that reason!

Could it be a Diana Wynne Jones?
I don't recognise the story (haven't read many of hers) but the cover sounds similar to "The Pinhoe Egg" and the story could be hers.

Jux · 12/08/2011 01:15

I thought DWJ too; though I don't remember the story and I've read most of hers. Covers change a lot, so though I'm pretty sure I have never seen a cover like that, it doesn't mean much.

It starts off like Tom's MIdnight Garden, but there's no maze afaicr.

Can you say how long ago your dd read/saw it, what age the book is probably for etc?

When you do find out, would you let me know? It sounds the sort of thing my dd might like too!

I know! It's The House on Falling Star Hill by Michael Molloy. It's a wonderful book. Adventure, magic, a bit of romance...

I loved that book, I had it as a prize from school

ScatterChasse · 15/08/2011 01:15

I had it when I was 10/11, but I wouldn't mind reading it now to be honest!

I'm going to have to dig it out now Grin

I know this is from a long time ago, but I saw it and realised nobody ever replied. I was just wondering if you found out hatwoman!
