Do you remember a book about a magic tree....?

It was my favourite book, yet I can't remember who wrote it or what it was called!

Definitely NOT Enid Blyton Faraway Tree. All the silly names would have driven me nuts. It was a more grown up book than that. I have a hazy recollection that it had 'Enchanted' in the title.... any ideas?

Would love to find it for my children.

not The Magic Apple Tree? not sure if it was actually magic, tho....Hmm

TanteRose · 25/05/2011 10:52

it was by Susan Hill, about a year in the country...so not magic really, sorry!

NorkilyChallenged · 25/05/2011 10:54

Hm, some quick googling research led me to this??

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 10:55

No definitely not that.

Also I have a very vague idea that there was some sort of launderette?! Maybe I was dreaming it Confused But maybe someone will know.

I think i might be trying to remember the same book, i think it was a one off not a series, the front cover mite have had a picture of the tree on the front with a face on it? It'll be in my mums loft!

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 10:57

Not the Magic Tree House series either. They are much more recent and I'm too old for that!

I've tried goggling with no results so was just thinking someone may also remember, but I know I'm not giving much to go on! Thanks for your ideas.

the magic faraway tree?

In the enchanted wood.

there was dame wash-a lot who used to tip water down the tree.

piratecat · 25/05/2011 10:59

never heard of it but i really want to know now!

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 10:59

Clayre: yes yes! Pale green cover ?

I've tried searching my mum's book cases too, but it must have been one of the ones that went to jumble - she's only kept children's books with pictures!

I think you are also right about it being a one-off as that would explain why I re-read it so many times.

The singing ringing tree?

stayathomegardener · 25/05/2011 11:00

Ok too late discount

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 11:01

wannaBe: I'm sure it wasn't the Enid Blyton - they make me cringe... :)

Singing Ringing Tree was a TV series ( have just searched for it).

Also the one I'm thinking about was much more ' normal' not princesses etc

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 11:15

Hooray - I think I've got it! :o

The Tree that Sat Down by Beverly Nichols.

A girl lives in a giant willow tree and has a shop in it (OK, not a lauderette!)

Also: The Stream that Stood Still (1948); The Mountain of Magic (1950); The Wickedest Witch in the World (1971) ...

Only problem now is that it's out of print and you can only buy rare copies online at £40 each :(

grinningbee · 25/05/2011 11:24

The other titles are all there too...

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 11:31

Thank you, have found one on Alibris an online 2nd hand book shop for about £7 inc postage and The Stream That Stood Still on Amazon 2nd hand.

I will read it when it arrives and see if it's as good as I remember. Great! :o See, Mumsnet isn't a waste of time at all Blush

oh, I remember that! was a lovely book..

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 11:35

Clayre - Hollow Tree house looks like it might have some appeal - you'll have to search it out, but I don't recognise any of the covers.

Another good one from ages ago; "The Children who liced in a Barn" by Eleanor Graham. First published 1938 about children whose parents have disappeared so they soend a summer setting up house by themselves in a barn - definitely a bygone era, but it is now published by Persephone books.

"Children who liVed in a Barn" surely?
Lovely story both dds have enjoyed it.
"Liced" in a barn gives me some strange ideas. Grin

betterwhenthesunshines · 25/05/2011 23:19

sorry - bad typo Blush, but a bet there was a bit of licing going on after a whole summer in a barn.

just excited at the thought of finally finding my favourite book!
