My nephew has been a bit of a reluctant reader but is just getting into it- slowly and with the right book. Apparently he can keep going for about 6-8 sentences but then needs a picture. Colour pictures are even better. He is a typical boy in liking adventure and naughtiness etc. Ive tried amazon (for the books you can look inside) but it seems horrid henry and roald dahl look too hard yet. He is reading to his dad so gets a bit of help, but the idea is that he will work out the words for himself. Any suggestions gratefully recieved. Its his birthday on saturday and im the designated book giver!

just tried magic treehouse but it seems to have about 4 pages before a picture. Think its too offputting

I haven't seen them, so you'd need to check, but I believe Beast Quest is the 'boy' equivalent to the Rainbow Magic books (picture on every page, very short chapters).

Horrid Henry Early Readers are a good bet. They take one of the stories from the main books, enlarge the font size and add lots of colour pictures. I'm assuming the HH's he's already tried are probably the originals (four stories in a book, a few black and white illustrations)?

Poetry? How about Spike Millgan, Roald Dahl or Edward Lear.

Yes, Horrid Henry Early readers are great. Also, my dd has just started reading books in this series. There seem to be more specifically boy versions as well. A little bit of writing, speech bubbles, lots of pictures.

Jack Stalwart (although I can't remember how many pictures it has!) or Charlie Small.

Personally, I hate Horrid Henry :)

SoupDragon · 13/04/2011 16:37

Charlie Small is too old I think - not enough pictures.

Ds is nearly 7 and a reluctant reader. He loves Captain Underpants.

Usborne Young Reader series. lots of colourful pictures and graded in difficulty. My dd's enjoy them

Elk · 13/04/2011 17:02

p.s. I am not an usbourne seller!!!!

Beast Quest. Not many pictures - but they are so exciting it should be OL.

And plenty of pictures in really short chapers in Mr Gum. Dad will enjoy Mr Gum too!

If it's not too late, how about Tintin? Both my boys loved these at this sort of stage. Marcia Williams' excellent comic strip style retellings of Greek myths, Robin Hood and King Arthur (among others) are brilliant too - loads of pictures, not in capitals, and lots of jokes varying in sophistication for parents and later reading pleasure.

Thanks everyone - mumsnet is amazing - have ordered a selection of all those listed above and a few of the Mr Gum...fingers crossed!
