I'm probably way out of touch with this but I have just come across the new Guardian childrens' books website - bit awkward to find from the main page, but it looks fun, and it has a "win your height in books" competition.

Can you do a link please

Type "win your height in books" into google and it will come up. Otherwise you can find it via the main Culture page on www.guardian.com

It looks to have enough sections but it's still not ideal. What is needed is a forum, where children can sign up and review and comment freely. That would need careful moderation but just submitting and accessing reviews doesn't engage in the same way that this sort of conversation we're having now does.

The address is actually guardian.co.uk not guardian.com

Hello, I'm Hannah and I work on the Guardian's new Children's book site. I just wanted to respond to a couple of good points that have been made, here.

cymruoddicatref, we agree completely with you that the navigation isn't as good as it could be, so we're looking into making some improvements.

DandyDan we do take your point that a forum where children could talk freely about the books they love, without having to submit their contributions to us first, would be great. We did think about having a forum on the site, but our number one concern is to keep the members safe online, so we took the decision that we would not have any free text boxes at all on the site, and all contributions would be premoderated. As you say, this does slow down a conversation, but we wanted to create a site where children of all ages could talk about books and authors, and we think that premoderation is, at the moment, the best way to do it.

Many thanks for discussing the Children's book site, and if you have any questions or suggestions, do let us know - we are only one week old today so all feedback is welcome.

Oh, and here's that competition link you were after: www.guardian.co.uk/books/childrens-books/2011/mar/07/win-height-in-books-competition

Many thanks,
Hannah
