She is starting to want to read at bedtime instead of watching tv!! Whats popular for a fairly typical teen. Thanks

Louise Rennison - her new one is Withering Tights.
Eva Ibbotson - she writes for a big age range, but for older girls who like old-fashioned romances, A Company of Swans is good (and a few more whose titles temporarily escape me).
Any number of ghastly "dark romance" books in similar vein to Twilight.
The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins - a must read for all 13-year-olds IMO. Cannot recommend highly enough.
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.
Loads of fairly undemanding generic teen books by authors called Cathy - Cathy Hopkins, Cathy Cassidy - thinking of changing my name to Cathy to see if it will help me get published.

Oh please give her the Casson family books by Hilary Mackay! They are wonderful. Funny, touching, thoughtful and memorable.

Themumsnot · 07/03/2011 13:16

Oh yes - v true. Saffy's Angel is ace!

titchy · 07/03/2011 13:33

The twilight series is popluar with teen girls nowadays, Jacqueline Wilson books are good as well as addressing subjects such as divorce in a manner appropiate at that age.

goosiegander · 30/03/2011 17:58

One of the most overlooked writers for this age group is Helena Pielichaty. Her books about Simone, another - Accidental Friends and her series about girls that play football are brilliant.

JaneTX · 31/03/2011 12:32

At thirteen my daughter discovered Louise Rennison, and loved them. Georgia Nicolson character is great - a best friend you'd love to have. Twilight series love affair started then too, and still strong at 15. There's lots of Vampire-y spin offs that many teenage girls enjoy - all that 'dare I kiss him' stuff!
Was remembering the terrible things I read as a teenager - Flowers in the Attic by Virginia Andrews anyone?

triton · 31/03/2011 22:46

Oh yes Flowers in the Attic Grin. Come to think of it I am sure I read quite a few of her books - was she not obsessed with incest?

I used to read Sweet Valley High and Point Horror books - awful!

ChishAndFips · 31/03/2011 22:50

Agree with JaneTX, Georgia Nicolson's Confessions series, written by Louise Rennison are great for teenage girls. My 2 DDs loved them and laughed for hours and hours over certain passages, over and over again. Now they are older they consider themselves 'too mature' for such things Grin.

scruffybird · 04/04/2011 21:15

Rose bush + Finding sky + the twilights (wrote by 12 year old dd who is now going up to bed)

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 04/04/2011 21:20

My book-refusing 13 year old has read and enjoyed the following in the last couple of years:

The Georgia Nicholson diaries - but she didn't like Louise R's other ones
The Twilight series
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas
The Book Thief
Lord Of The Flies
A couple of Agatha Christies
The Noughts And Crosses series
Agree re Girl Missing - she read that about 3 times in 6 months!
