My soon to be 10 year old son is re-reading the Potter books for the 3rd time. He says he can t find anything else so enjoyable to read. Does anyone have any ideas for other books in the same vein as Rowling's series.
Many thanks

what about The Owl Service by Alan Garner too?

My 13 DS loved the Derek Landy books, which I can't blooming remember the name of but they involve a skeleton.

Another here for Phillip Pullman, both the Northern Lights trilogy and the series starting with The Ruby in the smoke, great adventures.

He maybe a bit young yet, but my 12 year old loved the Garth Nix: Sabriel, Lireal, Abhorsen trilogy (as did I).

Going back a long way I loved John Wyndam's The Chrysalids, great story Sci fi rather than fantasy though.

Your son may well enjoy the Fire Thief series by Terry Deary and particularly the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan.
I teach in primary school and have found the latter series particularly popular with boys of this age.

You may like to check out my website wwww.hummingbirdbooks.co.uk for lots more ideas.I only feature a book if my test readers (who are all children) have given it a 4 or 5 rating.

Not in the same vein as Harry p but much much more fun are the Mr Gum books. Good fun to read aloud too. And also recommend Vordak the Incomprehensible. Happy reading!

Good thread, I have put it on my watch list for ideas for my dd.

I know it has been suggested already but dd really enjoyed The Fire Thief Trilogy, I think I got them from the book people, and loves all the Horrible Histories/Science/Geography

Hi Suz, How about a series featuring jousting, sword fights, white horses, crop circles, ley lines and stone circles? Archer is skilled in many sports, but his real expertise is in archery (what else?). Although it has a medieval feel, the story is set in modern day in an alternate universe where all the 16-year olds compete in the Beltane challenges to see who will be crowned King and Queen of the May. Think Robin Hood crossed with Merlin and A Knight's Tale and you're halfway there. The author is Jacky Gray and she has also released the second book Rory where Archer travels to this world. Not sure if you would consider this in the same vein as the great Potter, but you can tell if it's right for your 10-year-old by reading the previews (and reviews) on Amazon.
