Mummy Laid An Egg by Babette Cole is good.

madhattershouse · 10/01/2011 00:28

Where did I come from by Peter Mayle! I read it as a child and loved drawing the pictures Smile available on amazon £4.03 new.

Clunge · 10/01/2011 00:31

Mummy laid an egg is amazing. My daughters are 5 and 8 and both enjoy it!

cazzybabs · 10/01/2011 13:21

How Did I Begin? by BRITA GRANSTROM

Takver · 10/01/2011 20:04

Another vote here for How Did I Begin, clear, easy to read and about the right level of detail, I think.

nickelbabysnatcher · 11/01/2011 13:41

yes, how did i begin is a good one.

there's also a walker book called let's talk about how babies are made which has a good level of details for 7yo.

Takver · 11/01/2011 14:44

nickel, while you're around, sorry for OT question, but is there a puberty/periods/etc type book that you'd recommend for a slightly older dc?

nickelbabysnatcher · 11/01/2011 16:28

Slightly - the one I always recommend (as a school library recommended it to me) is the usborne one:
What's happening to me?
It's aimed at year 6, and comes as a boy and a girl version. details here

HuwEdwards · 11/01/2011 16:35

I'm sure books are good, but when dd2 4yo and her sister 6yo at the time asked me, I gave them a biologically accurate description Grin DP was driving at the time and went positively white.

Takver · 11/01/2011 17:58

Many thanks, Nickel.

samels001 · 11/01/2011 18:08

Hi, Usborne rep here! What's Happening to me are fantastic books, but really for children aged about 9-10+. I will rummage through the catalogue and find a more age-appropriate title and post tomorrow.

nickelbabysnatcher · 12/01/2011 09:52

it's okay samels - it was Takver that wanted what's happening - The only Usborne ones about babies are for older readers - there's one just called "The Facts of Life - Babies", and that's aimed at 10+ (KS2/3 PhSE)

imo, the How Did I Begin is the best one around for younger than 7yo on how babies are made. (i think Mummy laid an Egg is hilarious, but a bit too detailed on one of the pages.... Grin )

Fionaflan · 12/01/2011 23:03

Made With Love is a nice book too, very clear and informative but gently so.

nickelbabysnatcher · 13/01/2011 12:12

it is a good book - it's out of print now, but you can get it second-hand, i'm sure.

AlaskaHQ · 02/02/2011 14:34

We have got the general "How your body works" book from Usbourne for my 4.5 year old.

So all about how your body works, but does cover babies being made too.

I would think it might be pretty good. We have already looked at the double page on how a baby grows and is born; I wasn't going to do the sex page for a bit longer, but for a 7 year old I would think it would be fine.

StickyProblem · 02/02/2011 14:40

We got the Usborne Flip Flap Body Book for DD aged 6. I think it's three books in one, what happens to food, senses and how babies are made (you can get them separately). She loves it and its at the right level.

chicki · 03/02/2011 23:26

Hi Im Usborne book organiser and highly recommend th how babies are made, a fantastic book to read and easy to understand. Let me know if you want a copy.

cymruoddicatref · 04/02/2011 08:23

Haven't read the whole thread but you can't really beat the hilarious "where Willie went" by Keith Allen. Genius.

stressedHEmum · 04/02/2011 08:55

Another vote for How Did I Begin. THere's enough detail in it for a young child and the pictures are good. My DD loved it and then started mortifying her big brothers and her dad by talking about magic cuddles and tadpoles all over the place Grin (Not the book's fault, I hasten to add.)

WouldUlikeacuppa · 14/02/2011 17:28

I would agree - Mummy Laid an Egg has been brilliant for my two boys!! Uses humour...which really helped!!
