Any recommendations re historical fiction/books about time travelling suitable for younger children?
DD (6)is interested in history, but all the old favourites I remember from childhood - Rosemary Sutcliff, Geoffrey Trease, Henry Treece etc are too old for her. I have looked at the Terry Deary books and 'The Time Travelling Cat' series...any suggestions welcome!

How about Tom's Midnight Garden?

Also we have just had this out of the library. I didn't rate it but dd is 8 so was a bit simplistic compared to other stuff she's read.

Yes, this is dd1's bag as well although she's 8. She's done the Terry Deary stuff - the Egyptian Tales www.amazon.co.uk/Plot-Pyramid-Egyptian-Tales/dp/0713670029/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1293788904&sr=8-15 and the Horrible Histories. She loves Jeremy Strong - There's a Viking in My Bed and one about a Pharoah. Somebody has recommended the Roman Mysteries series www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=174278 but these are probably too young for your dd. Then Michael Morpurgo and Jacqueline Wilson - Hetty Feather.

You could also try these www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=202713 and these www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=185672 and these www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=183849

I haven't seen them myself, but I know a lot of people on here rate the Magic Treehouse series, and I think they are aimed at around 6 y/o age group.

cymruoddicatref · 19/01/2011 19:07

A good one recently reprinted is Hilda Lewis "The ship that flew, Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope farmer, Alison Uttley 's a traveller in time, Melvin burgess An Angel for May, any of the wonderful series by Linda new bury, Adele gerais etc about events that take place in one London house at different stages of it's history. We loved these. Perfect way of giving younger girls a sense of the march of time. We live in an old house so the series has inspired lots of stories from our children.

Takver · 19/01/2011 21:08

I don't remember for sure, but I think Charlotte Sometimes is dreadfully sad and perhaps aimed at older children ? (am I misremembering?)

6 year old DS really likes the magic treehouse series - though they are written by an American author so some are slanted towards American history.

I think Ulysses Moore series is great :)
It has adventure, history and mystery - have a look at the review poem in the link above!
I read it myself to see what's all about and it draws you in, but the settings are quite realistic - so no monsters etc, not written in verse BTW.

nightcat · 20/01/2011 13:05

the first book is set in Cornwall too :) after that it moves on to Egypt, Venice I believe

trice · 20/01/2011 13:15

The Stone Book by Alan Garner is very good. Not quite time travel but very poetic.

mummytime · 20/01/2011 13:33

Might be tricky for her to read but ideal for you to read to her are all the E Nesbitt books (a few don't involve time travel such as the Railway Children and the Treasure seekers, but the rest do). I loved the House of Arden ones most.

JeffVadar · 20/01/2011 15:57

You could try out-of-fashion authors like Joan Aiken (Wolves of Willoughby Chase) Helen Cresswell and Nina Bawden. They are a bit gentler and would suit a younger reader.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/01/2011 16:01

Oh I loved Nina Bawden :)

phedre · 20/01/2011 16:04

Try Traci Harding, Ancient Traveller series. She is Australian author and at times it is a bit simplistic but has good concepts.

Ooh ooh "History Spies" series by Jo Foster; 4 books, set in Ancient Egypt, Rome, Victorian britain and WWII; Ah, just spotted your DCs age, maybe leave them a year or so.
Highly recommended for a history fan.
