Which book is the 'earliest' for kids in terms of vocab, story etc?

What age would you start with Roald Dahl, and with which book?

We started when DS was 3 with Fantastic Mr Fox because he had been to see the film. I think The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me is quite youngish though.

How old?

My dd is 3 and loves his poetry, particularly Revolting Rhymes.

She's familiar with all of his children's books but likes James and the Giant Peach, The Enormous Crocodile, George's Marvellous Medicine, Fantastic Mr Fox and the BFG best.

Ds read them about 4. The first one he really ejoyed was Esio Trot (quite short, but does have some stuff in about a relationship which will probably go right over a young child's head). He loved "The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me" and George's Marvellous Medicine.

He did once try and read The Witches, but that scared the living daylights out of him and would never try it again

Thanks for opinions. DD is coming up to three.

The witches is probably the scariest. With DS I had to make sure I didn't finish on a really scary bit when we were reading in the evening.

Roald Dahl at 2 sounds a bit much IMO. His books are very dark in places and much of the story will be lost. There are so many good books out there for younger children - there are abridgements of Paddington and Flat Stanley, The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark etc. Why not save Roald Dahl for an age when they can really appreciate it?

What about Mr Magnolia - as she's still two. My dd is three & a half & I haven't tried the actual books yet - though looking forward to this!

I agree 3 seems a bit young for Roald Dahl - I think his stories are a bit dark and complex for a three year old. I think the first one we read was the one about the crocodile which is more of a picture book, but not his greatest work.

As Madamhooch said there are plenty of good books for 3 year olds (I like Richard Scary and Dr Seuss) why not save Roald Dahl for later?
