Walkabout and Carrie's War - suitable for 10 yo?

I remember reading the above books when I was at school but can't remember what age. Do you think they are suitable content for a quite mature 10 yo. Both are quite sad in places but she isn't easily upset - read Black Beauty and the Railway Children without a sniff iirc. I would like to get them both for christmas.
