Books to read to an able 5 year old

I'm sure this has probably been asked before on here so apologies, but...

I have a 5 year old dd who is doing pretty well with reading for herself, but also really enjoys books being read to her. I am trying to start reading longer books as her understanding of stories that are read to her is pretty good, and I am struggling to find suitable books as the content doesn't seem suitable for a 5 year old in a lot of the stuff I pick up at the library. Roald Dahl is an obvious author, which is what I am starting with, but can anyone suggest some other authors that would be suitable?

Thanks.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and The Little Princess by same person. Brilliant brilliant wonderful magical books.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren is what my dd is completely hooked on.

Laura Ingalls Wilder - especially Little House in the Big Woods.

(I read the 2nd one to dd at that age as well, Little House on the Prairie, but you might want to read first to check you're happy with the content)

Anna Hibiscus and sequels by Atinuke

And all the oldies if you haven't read them to her already -
Teddy Robinson / Naughty Little Sister / Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf etc.

THe Clumsies. I love it too. Great pictures for a paperback too.

Enid Blyton Faraway Tree trilogy
started reading it to DDs (4 and 6) and then 6 year old disappeared off and finished them off herself, but still came to listen when i read them to DD2.

Dirty Bertie books, by David Roberts & Alan McDonald.

We love these - Bertie is essentially a good kid, unlike Horrid Henry, which we don't like!

DD loves the Rainbow Magic books, but for reading to your daughter I would give them a miss for as long as possible - they're not that great, and every one has the same storyline.

I started DD off on longer/chapter stories with the Rainbow Magic books. Tbh she'll be reading them herself in no time, so you won't have to read them out loud for long!

Wow, thanks for the list folks. I'm going to see how many of these I can get.

Thanks.

Paddington Bear in paperback (not sure if still in print) - very funny and right up a 5 yr olds street.

carbonel trilogy -barbara sleigh
worst witch books
my kids love laura ingalls wilder but you need to be careful re content. FWIW the first, little house in the big woods, is fine, the really dodgy one is little house on the prairie.
