We've recently been reading the Famous 5 to DS and I've just ordered all the Dragon's Cove books for him and we both enjoy chapter books but I don't think he or I are ready yet to abandon picture books entirely and wondered if anyone had any recommendations please?

Dirty Bertie, Flat Stanley series are a combination of picture and chapter books. My two DSs loved them at that age.

Iggy Peck Architect.

All of the books you read to him as a toddler he will still get immense pleasure from as he starts to read independantly, so please don't get rid of these!

There are loads of great picture books out there for "older" kids- things like Mouse and Mole and the Daisy books by Nick Sharratt.

ad forgotten about Flat Stanley. Not sure about Dirty Bertie though- don't think DS needs any encouragement in that direction! Iggy Peck Architect looks great, thank you!

Barefoot books have lots of lovely illustrated books suitable for older children - dd has the book of princesses which might not appeal so much, but this or this might.

Nick Sharratt books are loved for kids for a long time. There are some lift the flap fairy tale books (three billy goats gruff and three little bigs) that my kids eally enjoyed well into seven. Also 'You Choose' is a great book.

Also have you discovered the genius of John Burningham: 'Would you rather ...', Aldo, Avocado baby, The Magic bed. Fantastic stuff with lovely intricate pictures.

Kids also liked Anthony Brown books and one called 'The Paradise Garden' (not sure who by.

The library is great at this stage.

We have "You Choose". It's fab!

I think what we both like best about these kinds of books, apart from the illustrations, is the rhythm of the text which you lose when you switch to more text-heavy books.

I was thinking about Famous Five for my DS who's a bit younger (4) but loves listening to and getting involved in longer stories.

I used to love them but was concerned they might be too 'scary' for DS at the moment (he's a little sensitive) - I have recollections of dark, spooky moments and lurking baddies... or is that just my imagination?!! How did your kids find them HouseofMirth?

DS1 is 5 too, and he loves Burglar Bill. In fact anything by Allan Ahlberg. Jeremiah in the dark Woods is good, too (chapter book). he also really like the Katie Morag books by Mairi Hedderwick - lovely illustrations.

TheHouseofMirth · 05/12/2010 22:09

NKinDXB he hasn't been scared of them, no. DH has been reading them and I did a chapter one night where it seemed a little girl had been locked in a dungeon by grown ups. Made me a bit uneasy but DS wasn't upset by it at all.

I'm ordering him this, it looks amazing, and Iggy Peck Architect.

My son (4.5) loves the Charlie Stinky Socks books and Captain Flinn.

My Son loves the Traction Man books by Mini Grey. They are sort of half comic strip half story. I think he likes them as there is plenty to talk about in the pictures. They are quite good fun for adults too, as he really is like action man and always seems to have the right outfit.
