Birthday present ideas, books for an 9 yr old girl

What books would you recommend as a birthday present for a 9 yr old girl. She is my DD's half sister and not sure if she read atm, but I suggested to DD to get her a book she might toss aside at first but then it could really grab her and get her into a great habit.

Ottoline (there are 3 of them now iirc) by Chris Riddell/Paul Stewart. World Accordiing to Humphrey series , Enid Blyton, Tumtum and Nutmeg

Thanks, we are out of touch and will look some of the titles up. Think Enid Blyton will be a bit old fashioned for this modern miss as I read them umpteen years ago.

I think a book would be a thoughtful present at this age as I can remember getting into reading at 9 and DD at this age then never stopped.

There is a great series of fairy books eg Honey the sweet fairy. Loved by all girls of that age. I dont remember the author but all bookshops will stock them. My DDs love Dick King Smith and Anthony Horowitz and Maurice Gleitzman. Good luck!

Tracy Beaker? DD1 is nine and we just read the Demon Headmaster. She LOVED it and did a book report on it for school, and got a merit :)

9yo DD is a Jacqueline Wilson addict. She also recommends Pippa Funnell (Tilly's Tales) and books for older readers by Julia Donaldson.

Lauren Child has illustrated a version of Pippi Longstocking. It's a really lovely big book which I keep buying people as presents! It was on offer in WHSmith last week I think.

Diary of a wimpy kid. Eve Ibbotson, Cornelia Funke, Jacqueline Wilson is very readable so is probably a safe bet, but some are for younger than 9 and some much older so be careful which one.

Castle of Secrets is very popular with the 9-11 year old girls around here, I can't remember the author.

Cornelia Funke books are awesome, Inkheart series and Dragon Rider, DD loves them. We all like Morpurgo books too even if they are all a little sad.

Harry Potter first two have also gone down very well.

Harry Potter? Or maybe the Narnia books? And, as others have said, Enid Blyton still has appeal for that age group.

This is aimed at 9+ and is about somebody finding out they have a half sister.

Tell us a bit more about her- I'm an Usborne rep, so I know the Usborne books quite well, and obviously you don't need to buy off me, but I might as well share my knowledge!
