The dc are 7,7 and 6 and we always read tons of picture books to them however since they've all learnt to read we've fallen off the wagon a bit. This is partly due to us hearing them all read every night.

We really need to get back into things but just realised they'd probably like us to read chapter books more as that's what they're reading, maybe less picture books.

What are the most successful(that they loved) chapter/longer books you've read/are reading to your dc at that age and are there a few more complex picture books you'd recommend too?

DD is 8. Recent successes include

Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder (her husband's story, dd also likes the Little House books)

The Lionboy trilogy

The Swallows & Amazons books (a couple of years back) - long, but story perfectly fine for a 6 y/o

I tend to pick books that I will enjoy as much as my dd - now that she can read, I figure that she can read things that I won't enjoy to herself!

We are currently reading A London Girl of the 1870 which is an autobiography written in the 1930s. I got it out of the library thinking to read a few bits to dd as she's studying the Victorians, but she is loving it and wants me to read the whole lot :)

There's ones about the 80s and 90s as well. And some after the first world war (I have a trilogy of the first three :))

DS is 7 next month and enjoying me Reading the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe to him at the moment. He also loves the Sophie books by Dick King Smith

Anna Hibiscus books

Naughty Little Sister books

Milly Molly Mandy

Roald Dahl - esp "The Witches"

All quite girly, I suppose. Am pleased to hear the Little House books have stood test of time - hav been scared to revisit them just in case as loved them so much when I was child

Any of the Eva Ibbotson (RIP - just heard she died this week) books for younger children - particularly recommend The Secret of Platform 13, Not Just a Witch and the Island of the Aunts (though I think that might have been republished under a different title recently).

Also, they might think they are too old for it, but they are a really good age for the original Winnie the Pooh and Paddington books - the humour is just right for that sort of age.

The book that I've got from the library is actually that trilogy, Noah. I've been reading ahead to check suitability for an 8 y/o as its a long time since I've read them Grin

I suspect that the later ones won't appeal so much though once she gets past school age (though dd has read all the Little House books through to when Laura is married & Rose is born, so maybe that's not true).

Justdomylippy, I've found the Little House books even more fascinating revisiting them as an adult, don't worry!

MilaMae, if your dcs haven't read them, the Professor Branestawm books are good to read out loud, cheerful bedtime reading.

Oh, I am going to dig out my entire collection and force feed read them to dd, thanks.

Also loved the Professor Branestawm books - may even brave visit to folks' to find them...
