My 7yr old dd is an able reader. Her teacher has suggested Michael Morpurgo would be a great author for her but at a quick glance some of his books seem like the content might be a bit grown up. Which ones could you recommend for a younger reader? Thanks Smile

I've just bought 16 for £15 from the Book People.
Kaspar, Prince of Cats

Some of them have tricky bits but a happy ending. You know your daughter best, so why not go to the library, pick a few and read them first?
I've had mature and able Y3 read and enjoy
The Butterfly Lion
Dear Olly
Cool
Why the Whales Came
The Wreck of the Zanzibar

Actually we are off to the library this morning so I will have a look there. I actually wanted to buy her and ds a book each. She is Yr3 also (summer born).

Micheal Morpurgo is great but I garee some of his books are better left till Year 5 ish.

How about Dick King- Smith? Anne Fine?

ADuckCalledErnest · 16/10/2010 08:20

I'm sure Mr Morpurgo doesn't shamelessly overuse the word actually. Blush

We've tried Dick King-Smith but she didn't really take to them. She likes Roald Dahl, She's half way through the 3rd Harry Potter (but I'm stopping her after that as I think they get a bit too dark/teenage angsty for her) and has loved them. She also likes the How to Train Your Dragon Books.

Anne Fine is good.

My dds liked Adophus Tips at 6-7, that's one of the "younge" Michael Morpurgos. About a girl and her cat in WW2. Not too traumatic. Happy ending.

My 6 year DD has just got Michael Morpurgo's 'Dancing Bear' free with her comic today.
She's no doubt going to want me to start reading it to her tonight. Anyone know what this one's like? I might try and put her off for a bit and read it myself.

we loved the butterfly lion and flying with the unicorns

PaisleyPumpkin - dd (8) got that one too. She has just come downstairs crying because she finished it, and the bear dies at the end! Up till then she really liked it.
