I've just taken delivery (for the shop) a copy of Ballet Shoes for Anna (9780007364084)
Harpercollins has brought it back into print in their Essential Modern classics series.

Better by far than any of the other Noel Streafeild books - and etched on my memory from when I was about 9!

I'm so happy, I cuddled it when I unpacked it!

Ooooh - is that the one with the earthquake at the beginning?

nickelbabe · 28/09/2010 15:23

Oooh, I loved that - what age is it suitable for, nickelbabe?

Actually, while I have you here , is it permissible to pick the brains of the bookshop lady for recommendations for my DDs?

nickelbabe · 28/09/2010 15:26

stop addign things to amazon list SGM! (swearing in front of the bookshop lady!!! Shock)

Poledra - it's suitable for 8 upwards, I think. I sometimes still have dreams about the earthquake - in my dreams, I am wobbling around all over the ground, such was the imagery painted in the book (good thing, not nightmares!)

how old are yours?

It's mostly for 6-yo DD1 - she's read all the Faraway Tree and Wishing chair, she's tried a couple of the Adventure series (but they're probably a bit old for her) and she's had an Oliver Moon book out from the school library which she liked. She's also read just about everything (age-appropriate!) that Roald Dahl's ever written.

I want to know what's new out there for her - not just the same things I read. What would you recommend (so I can let the rellies know for Christmas!)?

CMOTdibbler · 28/09/2010 15:34

I love that one. Have you read the Whicharts?

Her adult novel that she turned into Ballet Shoes - quite racy for the time

nickelbabe · 28/09/2010 15:41

SGM- i do mail order Wink

Oh, I like Oliver Moon.

Have you tried her with the Daisy books (Kes Gray)? or Humphrey (a school hamster - stories are written from his perspective and quite funny, by Betty Birney)
If she likes old-fashioned books, then I would always recommend Milly-Molly-Mandy or My Naughty Little sister.

Pongwiffy (is a witch)by Kaye Umansky is popular here, as is Kitty (by Bel Mooney) - that's making a comeback, though.

CMOT- that's a new one on me, I will check it out! :)

I was really pleased to find Ballet Shoes for Anna in a charity shop a year or so ago - a Collins Modern Classics edition from 1998. I enjoyed it, but it's definitely not my favourite, which is probably Ballet Shoes, just because I think I read it monthly from 8 to 14.

:) the last time it was in print was 1998.

I was disappointed in Ballet Shoes, because I read it after Ballet Shoes for Anna.
I thought it would be a similar story and it wasn't :(
