We are running out of reading ideas. What has your 9 - 12 year old read lately that they loved. What did you love at that age ?

DD is working her way through The Chronicles of Narnia, having been read an excerpt of The Magician's Nephew in assembly at the start of term. She's up to Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

one more for the list:

The Mysterious Benedict Society

My Year 5 Reading Group shadowed the UKLA Book Award this year. They particularly enjoyed 'The Eleventh Orphan' by Joan Lingard (Victorians) and all absolutely loved 'Then' by Morris Gleitzman which surprised me because I would have thought that the content might be too much for them. However, they all stated that, even though some of the story made them sad, it was so well written that they wanted to continue reading. 'Then' is the middle part of the Gleitzman trilogy - 'Once' 'Then' 'Now'.

Ds is reading Northern Lights and absolutely loving it. He even turned the TV off yesterday to read a bit more Shock.

He also loves Artemis Fowl.

SixtyFootDoll · 27/09/2010 10:10

My DS agd 10 loves the Alex Ryder - Stormbreaker series.

DD is reading the Ali Sparkes Shapeshifter series. She has just finished the Ranger's apprentice series and HIVE.

TheFirstLady · 27/09/2010 14:00

DD2 (10) has just finished the Demon Headmaster series. She has recently read the Roman Mysteries series and also the Lady Grace series. She is reading Anne Frank's Diary atm. Other stuff she has enjoyed recently include Lionboy, quite a few Michael Morpurgos (Adolphus Tips, War Horse, Running Wild and the new one which I can't offhand remember the name of), Harry Potter, Carrie's War, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, The Exeter Blitz, Remembrance (she has a bit of a World War thing going on).

My eight year old loved 'Phoebe Finds Her Voice' (9-12 year range). Suitable for girls and boys it is a warm story about a shy girl who literally 'finds her voice' and her confidence when she sings in a drama club performance. It covers relationship issues (separated parents)in a more subtle (therefore more real-life)way than Jacqueline Wilson and doesn't 'harp on'. It's also genuinely funny and a great story! Would highly recommend it.

I picked up some books from a self publisher on facebook and my son loved them, they were called 'the house with no snow' and 'soooperb spiders' was funny in parts and quite cheap. The authors name is Gerry McCarton and as i say you can find him on facebook.

singersgirl · 28/09/2010 12:22

I'd add to this The Edge Chronicles by Paul Steward and Chris Riddell - there are about 12 of them in 4 trilogies.

Phillip Reeve is worth a try too. DSs have enjoyed the Larklight trilogy, but we haven't read the Mortal Engines series, which I seem to hear more about.

cymruoddicatref · 01/10/2010 22:47

We like Eva Ibbotson's books - the ones about ghosts and fantasy creatures are fun - closer to 9 than 12 - there seem to be lots of them. Well written and readable.

She's also written some good "historical fiction" for older girls that goes down well in our house.

pointydog · 01/10/2010 22:54

Diary of a Wimpy Kid books v v popular.

LOTR if fantasy gives pleasure.

pointydog · 01/10/2010 22:54

Frank Cottrell Boyce v v good. Try one.

basildonbond · 03/10/2010 14:29

ds2 (10) just raced his way through the Indian in the Cupboard series

Fennel · 04/10/2010 19:43

Mine (10 and 9) are reading lots of Victorian themed fiction, see the other thread on that. so it's an unusually classics-based month here. Normally they read Jacqueline Wilson and Horrible histories, this week it's Water babies and E Nesbit.

Also Castle of Shadows, Eva Ibbotson, Cornelia Funke, and Hetty Feather, Philip Pullman (the master and the scarecrow), My family and other animals, Roald Dahl's Boy, and Diary of a Wimpy kid.

DandyDan · 05/10/2010 11:38

dd (10) is reading Little Town on the Prairie right now, having just finished the Twilight series. She recommended today (we were helping another mum at the bookshop) Magyk (Angie Sage) Warriors (Erin Hunter) and Dear Dumb diary (very pink).

ds(11) is currently reading some Halo tie in, but is waiting for the next volumes of Artemis Fowl, Warriors, Charlie Bone and Lord Sunday (Garth Nix)

At that age I tended to read anything that I could lay my hands on, but books I've kept for my children include anything by Dianna Wynne Jones, Joan Aiken and Susan Cooper.
