Rather than a book how about he new Good Food magazine aimed at children?

Hulababy when I looked at the website it says its for 3-6 years old. Is this right? or have I got the wrong place?

I was given this one when I was about 12, and I loved it and still use it regularly now! Not a 'children's' cookbook, but any of the Good Housekeeping Step-by-Step cookbooks are really simple to follow and I'm sure your 9 year old could use them, and she won't grow out of them.

DD got The Yummy Little Cook Book, Usborne. It's cakes, biscuits and sweets, but that was all she was interested in making then.

It's easy to follow and dd made quite a lot of stuff from it; she still uses it, and I'm sure that she'll still be using for some of those things for years.

I didn't realise that Mercedes. Not bought one yet but was considering them for DD, but if you are right they will be too young.

I've had the Good Housekeeping one for years, and it is very good.

It's hard to beat St Delia as she covers all the basics, but I also like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Family Cookbook, which has a rather more fun approach here.

Absolutely loads here

What kinds of things does she like to cook already?

I got DD Sam Stern's Get Cooking for her 9th birthday. It's really good and isn't just cakes and sweets. It's more like Jamie. We've tried a few dishes so far and all have been great.

The best book you could possibly buy would be "Cherry Cake and Ginger beer" - I can't now remember the author and haven't the energy to go downstairs to the kitchen - it's a truly fantastic book of recipes adapted from childrens' books - my daughter, who is now 13, has made loads of them, but we especially like the brilliant recipe for Bruce Bogtrotter's chocolate cake from "Mathilda". Inspired.

I've ordered the Sam Stern book as she wants to make meals rather than cakes. Thanks for the suggestion.
