Modern 'proper' books suitable for 4 yr old

Just finished Faraway Tree with DS - first 'proper' book with nightly chapters - and he LOVED it. Keen to build on this but not well up on modern children's authors.

Amused to read thread on Faraway Tree. It is a fantastic story, and I intend to read other classics with DS. But modern kids do need to hear modern language. I can't have DS starting school next week coming out with stuff like: "Golly! How Queer!"

Anyone got any good suggestions? He's bright, but is only just 4. Cheers x

Roald Dahl. My dd lapped it up at that age.

I'm not here yet, but bumping for you and watching thread with interest.

Roald Dahl's books were written decades ago, but to my mind the dialogue hasn't dated at all. Worth trying the lighter ones.
Mr Majeika perhaps?
Worst Witch books are great if he doesn't mind hearing stories about girls.
Horrid Henry? Captain Underpants? Exactly how vernacular do you want to get Smile?

NKinDXB · 07/09/2010 18:29

Don't mind vernacular as long as it's well written! Will check out your suggestions, thanks.

I was definitely going to get some Roald Dahl. Some probably not appropriate yet but I'll enjoy re-reading them just to make sure - I used to love them!

Winnie the Witch chapter books?

(If you don't know the picture books they are also v. good.)

My DD is 4.3 and has really enjoyed some of the Roald Dahl books.

The twits
The enormous grocodile
The giraffe, the pelly and me
The magic finger
Fantastic Mr Fox
Georges Marvellous Medicine (her fave)

All fairly simple stories and she's loved them all.

Enchanted wood as well as the far away tree (provides the back story for the faraway tree)

(When I was a child I loved the wishing chair as well (also enid blyton) although I haven't tried that with DD yet.)
