My son is an able and keen reader however loves humour in books rather than the typical horror, adventure and history that is written for boys. We've coped so far but the older he becomes the more difficult it is and he is re reading books well under his level because we can't find anything. Any help greatly appreciated!

Have you tried;
Spud, Spud, the madness continues, and Spud, learning to fly all by John Van De Ruit.
The funniest books ever according to my son.

What are yours?

how about Terry Pratchett? v funny acc to ds1

and has he read Artemis Fowl - if you ever get the chance to go and hear Eoin Colfer speak, do so - he's hysterically funny, much funnier than many stand-up comics I've seen

Louis Sachar. Very funny & kooky books, some swearing if you can deal with that. Themes can be mature, mind. Excellent excellent writing.

My 11 YO still loves Cressida Cowell's Hiccup series. The Lemony Snickets are very funny too. The Artemis Fowls have a lot of humour (i get lots of bits read out to me - usually when I'm trying to read too Smile)

Diamond Brothers by Anthony Horowitz are hilarious.

Artemis Fowl books are the best books for boys I have ever read and they are quite funny.

Horrible histories/Science/Geography are good factual, funny books.

Lemony SNicket is popular in here, also Cressida Cowell. Jiggy McCue books are popular as well.

Can't think of any more funny ones at the moment. Sorry.

My 11 year old DS read 'My Family and Other Animals' (Gerald Durrell) recently, and found it very funny.

He has also enjoyed a lot of Terry Pratchett.

Other faves this summer have been 'The Medici Seal' by Theresa Breslin and 'The Red Necklace' by Sally Gardner. Both historical novels so not necessarily humourous, but maybe something a bit different from the usual 11 year old boy stuff.

The Saxby Smart detective stories? They're interactive - there are questions throughout the text so you can have a go at solving the mystery for yourself. A big hit at our school.

My DS is 12 and these are some of the books he has enjoyed in the last year or two. Not all funny but not typical boy thrillers either.
The Warrior Cats series by Erin Hunter
The Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence
Zizou Corder
Michelle Paver
Isabel Allende (forest series)
Michael Morpurgo
The Hobbit

My 12 yo DS is hooked on the Skulldugerry Pleasant series by Derek Landy which I think have some humour in them.

Pluto · 30/08/2010 22:21

Also Carl Hiassen's "Hoot" is really good.

Pluto · 30/08/2010 22:25

you can read about Hoot here

my dd 11 enjoyed the tent the bucket and me :emma kennedy, probably best if you read it first, there are a few naughty words.

life and times of the thunderbolt kid:bill bryson is very amusing too. details his childhood with his usual humour.

would he like the douglas adams' hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series?

Try 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Yet to find a child who's read it and not enjoyed it.
