Big books for a 4 year old boy

4 year old ds, dh and I are spending 6 months in India. I will not be able to take alot of books with me for ds and so am keen to choose wisely. I want to take both books and audio books (I will take a disc man with small speakers with me). I am looking for big stories that he can have a chapter a night from. I am also looking for books with lots of stories in them, or whole books within them even. At the moment I am thinking:

Hardback books:

  1. A big book with all the younger child Roald Dahl books within it.
  2. A big book with all the Faraway Tree, Enchanted Woods books within it.
  3. A lovely illustrated version of Alice in Wonderland.

Audio:

  1. Noddy stories
  2. Thomas stories

Any other suggestions would be more than welcome. Also I am having trouble finding the first two books listed above, but I really don't want to take lots of little books, I think several big books would be better for the trip.

Thanks a million for your help.

PAddington! A big book of Paddington stories was definitely available because I have it.

Have you access to The Book People - they do mail order and sometimes have collections of old favourites.

Also, have you thought of getting a Kindle? CMOTDibbler has one - she can tell you how good or otherwise it is - but you can download books as you need them, I believe (obviously you have to pay for them!)

Enid Blyton too old fashioned for you? It might still be possible to find a big book of bedtime stories by her somewhere.

Agree with Paddington. And possibly Peter Rabbit. You can get collections of those, too. It might sound a bit young, but think of all of the scrapes Peter gets into and adventures he has.

Thanks guys.

No, Enid Blighton and Paddington etc are not too old fashioned for me. I prefer classic books, as I read them as a child myself.

I have also been reading through other discussions and have added:

Pippi longstocking
Dr Seuss
Moomins
Winnie the Witch
Paddington
Peter pan
Just so stories.

I will get several as books but most of them on audio where the BBC have done them, as bbc audio is great.

We have Stephen Fry reading Paddington Bear stories. Think the CD set is of three or four books. Anyway, we started listening to A Bear Called Paddington on Friday and I thought I'd go to sleep (Stephen Fry has that type of voice to me, if he's just reading) but it was really good. So just a recommendation on the Paddington CD front.

Dr Seuss is good -- not sure I've ever seen audio versions, though. You can find collections of his work, though, but have to look for them. Will you be gone over Christmas? You can watch the animated classic The Grinch Who Stole Christmas on-line. (That's my second favorite Christmas cartoon, beaten by A Charlie Brown Christmas.)

Curious George .. there is a book with about 6 stories in.

Babar the Elephant ... again about 5 or 6 stories in one book.
Winnie the Witch
Dinosaur Cove - loads of chapter books
Roald Dahl stories
The Magic Treehouse - 28 books!

Audio - Harry and the Dinosaurs
