Reading books for dd (6.6) - what do your DC enjoy?

DD has really 'got' the reading thing, and enjoys reading either alone or with us

Am looking for recommendations for chapter books she might enjoy and that she can read herself as well as with us

We've read a lot of Roald Dahl and she has lots of the Rainbow Fairies books (thank God she can read these alone )

TIA

My dd is nearly 7 and also has the reading thing. She reads anything and seems to enjoy them all - she is currently reading her way through the Roald Dahl set, rainbow fairies, cat tales, secret mermaid and anything she can get from the library. Basically, I can't keep up with her and so, my best recommendation is to join the library.
Other than than Jeremey Strong books are good or any that I remember from childhood ( Milly Molly Mandy, Charlottes web) and she's just starting on Enid Blyton
I couldn't agree more on the Rainbow fairies and most of what she reads but am really enjoying re reading my childhood favourites!

More of a problem with my DS as I have no idea what he will enjoy!

DD is a little older now (8), but at your dd's age loved Enid Blyton (Secret 7 then Famous 5), also My Secret Unicorn (a bit Rainbow Fairy-ish), quite a few of the Walker Racing Reads series (similar reading level to RF).

She also (a little later maybe) liked Astrosaurs, & Astrosaurs Academy Cptn Underpants, Dick King Smith.

Think I have my old copy of Charlotte's Web somewhere, will have to dig it out

my son (5.5) loves reading and is currently working his way through the Secret 7 series. I was never mad keen on Famous 5 as a child myself and I think it's a little older so that's why we started with SS. We did the Magic Faraway Tree books when he was about 3, but he is now re-reading them himself and loving all the characters all over again. Flat Stanley is another good series. I do think the original book is the best, but the others are OK too and the chapters are quite short so she dhouldn't get bored before she's finished a chapter - good for self-esteem and satisfaction! The other ones we've just started are the Chronicles of Narnia and my son is loving them too.

Mr Gum - a must read for all six year olds.
The Daisy and the Trouble with series
Anne Fine - Diary of a Killer Cat, Bill's New Frock etc
If you want something similar to the Rainbow Fairy series but not quite as ghastly try Linda Chapman's stuff - Magic by Moonlight, Secret Unicorn etc etc.

Ms Whizz

The Young Corgi series is quite good at that age. Black Queen by Morpurgo and Robomum by Emily Smith are in the series, I think, and good fun reads.

dd2 loved Patrick teh Party Hater at that age which is also by Smith I think.

The Flat Stanley stories are a hit with many.

we've just started the secret seven books and have paddington lined up after that

she also enjoyed the mrs pepperpot and worst witch books

(dd is 6 and a half and quite a good reader but they are a bit hard going for her to read a whole chapter herself )

Aeldredida · 17/08/2010 15:28

Titania Wood writes quite good fairy books, and Worst Witch are good.

Aeldredida · 17/08/2010 15:29

Also, My Naughty Little Sister and Amelia Jane.

Has she read the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder? They are great, full of adventures and details about the amazing lives they led in the wild west! My DNs enjoyed them a lot at that age.
