Biographies/diaries suitable for 7 yr old?

Dd1 is a complete book worm and currently devouring a range of fiction books. Her reading level is good for her age (just got 3b for reading in school report, just to give you an idea of her level).

She's not that keen on non-fiction books, but I think would be interested in biographies / diaries of famous people, other children etc. (thinking Anne Frank type but she is too young for that content yet, I think).

Does anyone know if anything like this exists, please?

Roald Dahl's boy?

nuru · 22/07/2010 20:00

Sounds interesting - she's read most of the Roald Dahl books. Do you have any more details?

Has she read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books - both the ones about Laura as a child, but also Farmer Boy about Laura's husband.

Boy
Has same Dahl style but talks about his life, instead.
I particularly remember reading about his life as a "fag" a prep school, and how he had to warm the bog seats of other kids - i htought this was hilarious

Maybe not quite what you are thinking of but my dd is reading Miley cyrus's biography at the minute

(hangs head in shame)

ninja · 23/07/2010 09:50

I second Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Does it have to be non-fiction? Have you thought about historical novels that will still be more challenging, Rosemary Sutcliffe for example

Fennel · 23/07/2010 09:56

My 8yo likes a book called "mill girl", it's one of a series of semi-fictional biographies of real children in history.

she also likes the Jacqueline Wilson autobiography written for children.

and I used to love an E Nesbit autobiography written for children, called "long ago when I was young". About her Victorian childhood, being sent to boarding schools at 7 and travelling through the Alps in a pony and carriage in a thunderstorm.

Fennel · 23/07/2010 09:57

oh I must get the Boy book, my dds would love stories of having to warm the loo seats at boarding school....

nuru · 23/07/2010 20:10

oo, lots of ideas, thanks!
Will look into them and let you know dd1's responses

What about the "My Story" series from Scholastic - there are loads of those and they are not too long.

nuru · 23/07/2010 20:14

Will look into those too!!

What about things like Born Free and Traka the otter - real life but with animals

Decorhate · 23/07/2010 22:32

What about the Naughty Little Sister books? I also recommend the Laura Ingalls Wilder ones...

ninja · 23/07/2010 22:32

Actually ignore that - Tarka the Otter is fiction and not sure about how easy/difficult Born Free is

cory · 24/07/2010 08:14

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.

ninja · 24/07/2010 19:43

oh I love that book Cory

nuru · 24/07/2010 19:50

She's already read Naughty Little Sister and think Born Free is a bit old for her yet, similarly When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit - she's a bit sensitive!

Will try some of the My Story books - they look right up her street and will pick up areas of interest she already has.

Thanks

usborne young reading FLorence Nightingale
(my dd liked that one)

She has also read biographies of Harriet Tubman (maybe your dd at 7 is a bit young to digest the sufferings of slaves in America), Harry Houdini (this was great), George Washington Carver (she liked this, he was an ex-slave, lberated as a child who became a scientist), Charles Darwin, Marie Curie etc from various other series.

There are loads of books like that.

We also read books from the "Living History" series which are older books reissued and show you a part of history experienced through the eyes of a child. My dd loves these books but she is 9, I am not sure how your dd would like them at 7. The first one we read was "When Augustine came to Kent"
