Really chaps my ass that people assume if you're childfree you don't want to leave to your money to anyone and therefore have no stake in inheritance tax.

Grr.

It really chaps my ass that my family have assumed I'll be leaving it to them.

Never mind the fact they have treated me like shit all my life they still want my money.

My mum told me not to punish my niece when I said that I wasn't going to be leaving it to family.

She said don't do that to the poor child. This "poor" child has 2 parents (divorced) both of them home owners and both of them working. She will inherit property from both and money. She does not need to inherit from me and she will not be doing so.

I hate the assumption you're happy for it to go to family just because you don't have your own children or spouse.

Couldn’t agree more. The entitlement to your money some people feel when you don’t have kids is incredible. I’m lucky my brother isn’t like this but some of DH’s relatives are.

Niece and nephew on one side I have no relationship with because DB was NC for years (now in touch) and they come from a wealthy family anyway on mother's side. In fact I have no idea if they even know I exist. Nephew on the other side is a nice bloke but I only talk to him and him to me when I visit Australia - so no compulsion to leave any of them anything. I intend to use my money for a comfortable old age and leave as little as possible except to charities and friends.
