"Adult Only" things you'd pay a premium for. ** CHILDFREE SECTION**

* If in active, please note this is posted in the childfree section. *

Whether it exists or not, what do you / would you pay more for?

DH and I always pay through the nose to stay in a nice adults only resort when we go away. We won't even entertain staying somewhere with just an adults only section no matter how nice.

I went to London Zoo for Zoo Lates this year and it was adults only with drinks and nice food - worth every penny.

Wishful thinking - I would give my right arm for childfree flights or a truly adults only restaurant.

I would but unfortunately I'm in the minority...3 out of the 5 clients have kids with them. 😡

I’d make a point of either saying what I think when I leave or leaving a scathing Google review on them.

Seeing as the last few places I went to (mostly for removals and summer pedicure gels) were biting my hand off trying to get me to return they want business!

Of course she noticed. She just doesn't care. I think I'll go onto the breastfeeding board and give them the benefit of some totally unwanted and inappropriate advice.

Maybe we should all do the same

Takoneko · 27/10/2023 17:34

I don’t consciously pay extra for “adult only” experiences. I’ve never wanted kids of my own but don’t consciously avoid them when out and about.

I do love the sound of an adults late night at the zoo event though. I’m definitely going to do that next summer.

I also love theme parks and once spent Christmas Day at Disneyland. The kids there didn’t bother me but I did observe that the parents wrangling kids often looked like they were having a miserable time… I reached the conclusion that Disneyland is best enjoyed without children. Not sure I’d pay too much of a premium for a totally childfree day though.

Restaurants
Pubs
Cafes
Parks
Housing
Planes
Trains

Hmm....just about anything 🤣🙈 I'm not the child friendly sort

musixa · 27/10/2023 17:40

As an adult, I wouldn't dream of suggesting that adults (other than care-givers) should be allowed in children's spaces. Not sure why some are suggesting the other way round is unreasonable.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 27/10/2023 17:43

Pubs. Aways pubs. At least in the evening.

Specifically our smallish local where DH and I have been drinking for decades. It's a proper wet pub. No place for kids (and I like kids). Last Friday evening (busiest time of the week) the two biggest tables had been taken over by large family groups. Even more annoying, two of the children had taken over a separate table rather than sitting with the others - so a third table was out of action for adults.

Call me a curmudgeon but I want to sit down for a drink after a week's work not stand up in my coat with a heavy work bag.

EVERYTHING.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 27/10/2023 17:49

Planes. Every single time there's some feckless idiot who's booked a baby onto a night flight and then sits there while it screams for 4 hours. And at least one other letting its little darling play games or videos with the sound up.

I already only go to adult-only hotels but that doesn't cost extra. When I was younger I went to plenty of 2star* *adult only places for peanuts. Now I pay for 5star ones!

ohtowinthelottery · 27/10/2023 17:51

I remember booking tickets for DH and i to go and watch Paddington 2 at one of those small independent cinemas at 8pm in the hope that there'd be no children there. There were 2 very well behaved children but the rest of the audience were older folk! Hell would freeze over before I'd have gone to Cineworld to watch it!

TBF, night flights bring out the worst in some adults as well. I can recall one to Australia where the food had been served and the lights dimmed so people could sleep, but a couple of passengers insisted on having a loud conversation until told to zip it.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 27/10/2023 17:57

I’m childless and in the heartrending grief stage so I’d pay for childfree and bump-free please. I can’t bear the sight of visibly pregnant women. In society, I have no choice but if I could pay, I’m there. Hotels and restaurants especially!

Literally never been annoyed by adults on a flight except brief moments like some tit leaning on my chair. It's always children and babies or, more accurately, their lazy parents.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 27/10/2023 17:59

So sorry, @Wednesdaysotherchild 💐

The problem is that it wouldn't be reasonable to say "all the seats are reserved/full apart from the ones in the quiet carriage so your four year old just has to stand all the way to Aberdeen"

No, ok, but it surely wouldn't be difficult to set up a system that says "allocate parties with child tickets to regular carriages unless no other seats available"? I doubt many families with young children actually want seats in the quiet coach unless there is no other seating available but they might get it anyway. I have certainly been allocated a reserved seat in the quiet coach when I haven't requested it, and not when I have booked at the last minute or when the train has been full either, so I can well imagine it happens to other people, including those travelling with children.

I’d rather like an adults only version of soft play - giant climbing frames and nets, long slides big trampolines or bouncy castles, ball pits with no risk of a horrible surprise (dummy, soggy muslin) lurking at the bottom…

Opposite way round for me. I don’t know if it’s the places I tend to fly to but I’ve never been annoyed by kids on a flight. I remember getting onto a London to Tokyo flight and realising I was right across the aisle from a woman and her preschooler. I was inwardly groaning, but he was good as gold for the whole flight.
I also once ended up sat right between two different school trip groups of teens on a flight to Iceland. Again, I was dreading the flight but the kids just put on their headphones and that was that.
The teachers from one of the schools on the other hand spent the bulk of the flight standing in the aisle directly next to me chatting loudly in groups…😡
I don’t find the odd baby crying anything like as infuriating as behaviour of adults who should know better. We were on a flight multiple hen and stag groups to Greece once… it was hell.

mincepieandcustard · 27/10/2023 18:50

Iactuallydidit · 27/10/2023 17:13

@mincepieandcustard but when I was 14/15 I loved going to gigs at London Astoria, Brixton academy I would get the train after school wearing baggy jeans and band hoodie 🥰…I would like childfree gigs but feel mean depriving them of what I had. I didn’t take my parents with me mind you!

So did I, but things are a lot different for 14 years olds now to when I was 14. At 14/15 I was going to gigs, having a few drinks (no do you look 25 issues to get served back then!) and I didn't have a parent stood with me who wasn't that into the music! It's a different world now. Teenagers are generally so coddled compared to back then.

*You know how some women become mothers and then their whole existence becomes defined by the fact they've happened to reproduce?

I kind of feel like OP is the same but the opposite. Like her whole existence is defined by the fact that she DOESN'T have children?*

Hardly surprising given that this is the CHILDFREE BOARD. Just in case you missed that and the message at the top of the thread CHILDFREE SECTION

Oh right. Just seen who the poster is. The one who on another thread thinks we're all so damned selfish not letting parents have Christmas off work in perpetuity.

My kingdom for an ignore button, MN.

I'm a parent and that poster seems very tedious. The child-free suggestions on this post seem very reasonable and ones I'd also enjoy. But then I'm not someone who thinks the world has ended if I get invited to a wedding and my children don't Grin

Mulhollandmagoo · 27/10/2023 21:37

I'm sure years ago pubs, restaurants and cinemas (there may have been more) had a cut off time for children under a certain age, or am I remembering wrong?

I think a lot of it comes from a specific type of parent who is determined that having children will not impact their life at all, which is quite selfish.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 27/10/2023 21:46

It’s the same issue as the one with dogs - businesses go where the money is. Pubs especially will cater more to families because that’s where they perceive the business is to be found. Same with dogs. The kid and pet pound is very valuable these days.

A cafe local to me tried to ban the under 8s but a local mums group started an online campaign that was so bitter the cafe felt they had to give in. I’ve stopped going - it’s like a zoo in there, every time I pass it. It’s a shame as I don’t drink, and I’d love a cafe-like space that had a quiet adult environment.

I do think it’s a problem that there are so few adult-only spaces nowadays. It’s perfectly natural for adults to want spaces that are orientated around them, but we live in a culture that prioritises not excluding kids and mums. That in turn can increase intolerance of children and their behaviour (even if perfectly developmentally-appropriate, and definitely if it’s just kids running wild), which leads to more complaints from parents about adults not being welcoming to children.

To answer the question, my preference would be cafes, cinema showings, and planes. I’d also love to do something at Christmas (sorry, I do know that Christmas is ONLY FOR CHILDREN!!!!!, but I can’t help it, I love it).

Fofftwenty21 · 27/10/2023 23:11

Yes I agree @fitzwilliamdarcy and @Mulhollandmagoo it feels more and more places aren't only for adults anymore which is a shame.

I don't drink and as a previous poster mentioned often adult only stuff is around drinking. I agree with theatre, cinema, ballet etc and would love more things and more spaces/times that are only for adults especially for Christmas 🎄 😀
