Sleep

Following on from the thread about making decisions I was thinking that, for me at least, one of the major advantages of being childfree is sleep.

I, along with a few others, have been able to nap this afternoon. I also have a nap most days after work as I get home before my OH does.

And of course I've never had to deal with missed sleep due to a baby or young child.

What do you all think? Is sleep one of the advantages for you, too?

I have terrible insomnia, which I’ve had for decades. Sometimes I’m awake for days. So one of the benefits of being childfree, for me, is that when my body allows me to sleep, I can. If I wanted children I don’t know how I’d cope with finally being physically able to sleep but then not actually being able to because my child needed me to be awake.

That's a really good point, I was actually wondering about insomnia when I posted. So yes, sleep when works for you and you alone is another advantage.

Another insomniac here. I can't imagine anything worse than having to be responsible for another human after a bad night. Going to work is bad enough!

(I got 9 straight hours for the first time in months and months last night, it was heaven).

Yes I'm up at 4.30am for work and I'm not the best sleeper so being able to have an afternoon nap or just take it easy in the afternoon is essential.

BadNomad · 15/07/2023 22:33

Days off really are days off. I'm another bad sleeper who can go a long time on minimal sleep and daytime naps. Then I pick a day and just sleep all day. Couldn't do any of that with children.

I agree, although between two cats, an elderly parent I'm caring for, and my stupid bladder, I don't get as much sleep as I'd like! 😆 Still better than what it would have been during childrearing years, though.

It's definitely a big advantage. The sleep deprivation must be brutal. Though from what I hear, some parents are lucky and get 'good sleepers'.
I suffer from migraines and don't know how I would have coped during one. I guess you just do.

TrundleWheel76 · 16/07/2023 09:15

Tovbe honest I'm not sure how well I would have coped with a newborn and sleep deprivation. I'm absolutely terrible if I don't get enough sleep and need at least 8 hours plus a nap to be really happy! Although as a previous poster has said you just have to get on with it and deal with whatever life throws at you.

Sympathy and hugs for those experiencing insomnia, it must be horrible.

And I relate to the bladder issue, now I'm approaching the grand age if 50 I seem to need to go at least once in the night! I usually fall back to sleep straight away though, and if not I listen to an audio book or podcast which helps.

I have bad insomnia at times as well. It’s basically how my brain responds to stress. And I’m not good at sleeping in to compensate, so even at the weekend I always get up by about 8. So I do often have a little nap on weekend afternoons, I don’t think I’d cope at all if that wasn’t an option.
Feeling pretty smug today though, because I was out until after 1 last night and I still did a 7k run and a yoga practice this morning.

You’re like a modern day Wonder Woman! I’d be feeling smug too if I were you!

I usually sleep better if Miss Megacolon has done a poo that day (my own nocturia notwithstanding). 😄

I generally sleep well but have terrible fatigue due to medical conditions and it is definitely a plus being able to have a lie in or sometimes have a nap during the weekend! 😀
