How many creative hobbies do you have?

Obviously without kids we have some time for extracurricular pursuits and hobbies. Though what with work, health constraints, relationship stuff, friendships, life admin etc … that time can be limited.

How many creative/educational/outdoors hobbies is it sensible for one person to have if they really want to get stuck in and enjoy them?

I am asking because I tend to take up too many hobbies and then end up dropping them. Is just one or two realistic?

I think it depends on so many factors!

I’m naturally lazy and prefer a quiet life - it’s one of the reasons I don’t have kids, I don’t want to fill my life with business and activity.

So I have only 2 main ones (reading and video gaming). I do try and indulge in a couple of others (writing and language learning) when I can.

I have been learning German. I love learning it. My teacher kicked me out of my French in school. She said I was useless. It's sociable, it's cost my nothing. Loads on YouTube and the odd book from the library and charity shop. Very happy

Florissante · 24/06/2023 20:30

Gardening and baking.

I love to read, too, but don't think that would fit under the category of 'creative'.

BadNomad · 24/06/2023 20:30

About 203. I have ADHD so have a tendency to start something, then forget about it, then start something new before realising it is something I'd already started before.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 24/06/2023 20:38

I work 46 hours a week over 4 days. I'm knackered but it does leave me three days to do other stuff.

I swim, walk, read, paint, sew, papercraft, block print, make soap and candles, pursue my witchcraft interests ( always a neighbour to hex, etc)

That's enough for me. I wish there were more hours in a day/ days in a week to be honest.

Dogsitterwoes · 24/06/2023 20:55

I don't think a hobby, or trying out a craft, has to be for life. It's nice to have fun trying new things as well as having a hobby that you feel really passionate about. I think it's only a problem if you keep buying lots of expensive equipment and then not using it for long.

Creative stuff I do regularly - writing.

I keep meaning to have a go at crochet as I think that's something I might keep up. If not, it doesn't matter.

Last year someone was kind enough to teach me wooden spoon carving and lend me the tools, and I had some happy hours whittling away, love my spoon, but I'm content with a one off.

I also went to a pottery painting session. It was fun.

I enjoy reading and cross stitch and occasionally dabble in the kitchen. I'm currently doing a wedding sampler for a friend.

Shetextsme · 25/06/2023 13:25

I have loads of hobbies but most of them aren’t something I do regularly eg I paint but just as and when inspiration strikes, I build Lego but only a few times a year, I write, but again only when inspiration strikes, not regularly. My regular hobbies are cooking, music, tv, reading, walking and I do a lot of online learning.

Not many becos I'm not a hobby person (unless reading counts) because I pick stuff up and then can't be bothered. Inspired by Bob Ross I'm painting, and writing, come winter I'm having a crack at crochet and knitting.

AnnaMagnani · 25/06/2023 13:49

So so many. Doesn't mean I actually do them that frequently - there was the cross stitch it took me 10 years to complete.

Probably cooking is the one I do most often as you need to eat every day.

Everything else is as and when. Currently a big struggle as I've had tennis elbow for 3 years which has basically killed knitting and sewing for me.

Thanks everyone 🙂

Does prosecco count?

I like to kayak when I can and go to the cinema / theatre / gigs but I am very much hobby free 😬

Spidey66 · 25/06/2023 17:32

I like adult colouring books and diamond painting.

Hellokittymania · 25/06/2023 17:40

Since I bought my home in March, and now have a big balcony, I am starting to learn about gardening. I only have some geraniums at the moment, but they are still alive, somewhat, after four weeks. So I guess, that’s a good start. Once I am more settled, I really plan to get a piano or guitar and learn how to play some music. I’m also learning how to sing more and more songs in different languages. I speak quite a few, and I love to sing, it’s just I can’t remember the words of the songs. I recently learned to sing Pocahontas‘s colors of the wind in Greek

Catsmere · 28/06/2023 06:18

Just one, these days - knitting. Used to have more.

(Unless taking photos of my cats and posting them all over the place counts? 😸)

CrunchyCarrot · 28/06/2023 10:18

My hobbies have changed a bit over the past 20 years due to physical disability (used to love gardening but can do very little now), I used to do online roleplaying on a daily basis but the website I was on changed a lot and people left so I no longer do so. Knitting was always my main hobby but I rarely do that as I am online so much. I do like to read occasionally!

Now I am very much into storm chasing (online US streams) and moderate for a couple of chasers on YouTube. I am trying to learn more about meteorology as a result! Also mod for a Virology professor on Microbe.TV.

Was learning Welsh and loved it but that has sadly fallen by the wayside as I just don't have the time and energy for all these things!

musixa · 06/07/2023 17:36

Oil painting, creative writing, very occasional craft projects.

KimberleyClark · 06/07/2023 21:45

Photography. Never happier than when I have my DSLR in my hands. Phone camera is not the same.

TrundleWheel76 · 08/07/2023 15:51

Baking, particularly bread
Knitting
Embroidery
Gardening, growing fruit, veg and herbs

I have other non creative hobbies as well, reading, films, walking.

Plus I'm studying for a degree with the OU.

🙂

littleegghead · 11/07/2023 09:46

I'm not sure reading counts as a creative hobby but I do a lot of it.
I sing in a choir, and sometimes do musical theatre stuff. Also really enjoy cross stitching but rarely actually sit and do it, more in winter. DH and I did a free painting workshop at a local college recently and loved it, so maybe oil painting will be next on the list!

Thehonestybox · 11/07/2023 09:53

I'm the same! Take on way too many little projects and random things like pottery classes. I would like to pick one main hobby and focus on it properly until I can turn it into something useful and not just a hobby (NOT a job either, but a public contribution I suppose).

As a child free woman I have a feeling I need to contribute and deliver something to society in lieu of contributing a new human (I bet a few of us feel like this), so focusing on one hobby in depth seems like the best plan. I reckon becoming a niche and thorough collector of something would do the trick, but I haven't decided what yet!

KimberleyClark · 11/07/2023 10:08

One of my hobbies is browsing the bookshelves of charity shops and secondhand bookshops. It is creative in that it results in stacks of books in my house!

If you take on lots of little projects and random things, maybe your one in depth hobby could be collecting knowledge about hobbies… So you still take on lots of little projects and random things and as you go you learn a little about each one and one day you’ll know something about (almost) everything!
