How, where, and when do you holiday?

As this board is aimed at those of us who don't have children, I often wonder what others in this position do for holidays. The main holiday board is often full of theme parks, days out and focused (naturally) on catering to children and family holidays.

What do you like? Are you a sunbed person, do you like resorts? Do you prefer adult only, and do you/are you able to travel term time?

I don't like sunbeds, or resorts, or places catering to children and families, and fortunately can travel outside of school terms. I usually go to Europe, so I pick a country and spend 10 days+ travelling around using trains. I enjoy that. I like city breaks too. Never been on a cruise, have done all the long hauls I ever want to do, so it's easy access and pottering around for me!

Where? A whole range of places,
When? As often as possible!

We like variety and use pretty much our full annual leave entitlement on holidays, combining with bank holidays where we can to stretch it out as much as possible. In the last 12 months we've had:
A weekend in Ripley with gin making
Five days at the Edinburgh Fringe festival
Five nights in Berlin seeing my favourite singer (Frank Turner)
A weekend in the Lake District (that was a girls' trip)
Three weeks travelling round Thailand over Christmas and New Year
A weekend in York
A weekend in Yorkshire (another girl's trip)
An all inclusive week in Agadir, Morocco

We do the same, as much variety as possible and as many places as possible and anything from a night away to a few weeks away.

My absolutely favourite holidays are based around hobby related activities.

Often back to back long weekends with a few days between to drive comfortably from one location to the other. Stop off on the way, then arrive early and get sorted with restaurant bookings ahead of the rush.

Lovely.

Oops pressed send to early.

Other hits have been based on some combination of yoga and walking. Staying on a traditional wooden gulet, most meals on board, sail and land on beaches of other scenic locations, go off for a walk and return for a dip in the sea and a BBQ on the beach.

One lot of unpacking, potentially different location each day. Local crew who know all the best spots tailored to 'guests' requirements.

Didn't expect to enjoy multi sports activities, but fell in love with https://www.clublasanta.com on first acquaintance and return most years with the same group.

With a bit of research, a holiday can be exactly whatever you want it to be. I enjoy something to do, while DH is happy to people watch.

I'm lucky enough to really enjoy my job, too, so these days don't even suffer from the end of holiday blues which can spoil the end of the holiday.

Bliss

Our favourite holidays are skiing and Ibiza (the party side as we love house music). Skiing we just stick to skiing as I don’t want to waste valuable slope time being hungover. Other than that we do city breaks, active summer holidays (last one was Montenegro) the odd long-haul trip and visiting my family abroad. Always outside of school holidays of course! And not in the UK as I hate rain and it’s stupidly expensive.

Last holiday I had was in the US more than ten years ago. Since then I have become my mother's carer, living on the Australian carer pension, so holidays aren't a thing. I would have to organise respite care for my mother - and last time I did that the idiots at the nursing home didn't watch her, and she fell and broke her hip - and I'd have to put my two cats in kennels. Far too stressful all round, and tbh there isn't anywhere I want to go for more than a day trip.

DP and I are both teachers, so have to go in school holidays. For summer holidays we choose adult only hotels or a villa. We do a mix of chilling by the pool, do day trips, visit museums and churches, and eat where we want. At Easter or one of the half terms we will do a city break or two, choosing an apartment and travelling on foot or by train. Again we love galleries, museums, day excursions and sometimes even gigs if one of our favourite bands/artists are playing. We love it and know we are very fortunate to be able to have the child free life we do, so don't take for granted.
