Adult-focused days out

Can anyone suggest any good days out that aren’t targeted at the family market? Particularly interested in places in London and the SE.

National Trust was previously a good shout, but they’ve really ramped up the child-friendliness at weekends and school holidays and although I don’t need things to be child-free, I don’t feel comfortable going on days where there are special child-focused holiday activities.

Several of my work colleagues do "treasure hunts" you download them for a small fee. They involve walking round town solving puzzles and answering questions. They pretty much treat them as a slightly more structured pub crawl but they have great fun (a group of Childfree and empty nesters of various ages).

Geocaching too!

Some amazing suggestions here, a lot of which I hadn’t thought of. Will definitely be investigating all of them and am making notes about the ones not in my area (the Glasgow museum sounds incredible).

What!? They sound amazing!! If you could ask them for recommendations that’d be fantastic. I’m off to google too.

I think they just Google local town/area name treasure hunt

They have done a few areas. Obviously you want one that is intended to be done on foot if you want to make it a pub crawl.

They are looking at a train based pub crawl too though.

Epping Forest for a hike/walk. Beautiful greenery. Its pretty quiet and the few people I saw were mostly adults.

Are you into nature? I think Knepp estate (Sussex) doesn’t allow children on their tours/ safaris… They def don’t allow them at their camping.

This was going to be my suggestion. I love Knepp.

Art Fund for a list of what's on near you. London has loads of museums and galleries some of which aren't that busy.

Agree the smaller NT properties are often better. Same for English Heritage.

Historic Houses is also worth a look.

Heritage Open Days are also good. They have a huge range of events in September on all sorts of topics.

In London there is the Open House festival as well.

I had not heard of Knepp, it looks amazing but very expensive I imagine.

I’ve never been on one of their safaris so not sure about that, but the estate is free to wander around in and camping was pretty cheap. You‘re supplied with a fire pit for cooking and the facilities are very good. They have both outdoor and indoor showers with posh shampoo and shower gel, an outdoor bath and indoor and outdoor loos. There’s also a swimming pond (though didn’t fancy it myself, beyond a paddle), a nice farm shop, a coffee van and a pizza van that comes on certain days. I generally don’t enjoy camping but would love to go back there.
