Maternity Nurse - HELP

themaleworrier · 10/07/2010 13:46

We have been "given" a maternity nurse by DW's mum. We had a highly recommended girl booked but she has done the dirty on us and taken another (better? longer?) job. Baby due mid-December and DW now beside herself that we might not find anyone in time. Does anyone have any suggestions for good agencies? We don't want "some old bag" (DW's words I hasten to add!) but someone nice and young-ish and definitely non-judgmental! All suggestions gratefully received.

did you sign a contract?

Where are you based?

I have found that Maternity Solutions and Eden are very good if you're anywhere near London.

You could look yourself using childcare.co.uk, nannyjob and gumtree.

Hi PaulaMummyKnowsBest; no, we didn't sign a contract because she was a recommendation from my sister-in-law who had used her twice before. We're based in Buckinghamshire so we'll have a look at Maternity Solutions and Eden. Thank you so much for the suggestions.

Not the first time I have heard this kind of thing happening where maternity nurse either doesnt turn up or choose a longer booking not very professional in my opinion and luckily most are not like this.

One family I night nannied for 5yrs ago had one they had paid deposit to and had contract who just rang up day before due and said not coming - no sign of return of deposit or anything - the parents had rung 3 references for her all good, but decided to contact some of the other people on her cv and it became apparent she had done the same to them and never actually worked for them - well they certainly went down the route of suing etc with that one.

Sorry you didnt want horror stories- but worth being aware of.

You could find a maternity nurse privately many have own websites but guessing you just want to get this sorted and organised so an agency would be best at this time.

Eden have a good reputation as paula says as do kidsmatteruk.

Paula herself has a very good reputation but if I remember rightly she is booked up forever!!

I am booked otherwise I would have offered my services

It is truly shocking how some people behave.... Someone I knew booked a night nanny and they never showed up. No phone call. No text. Nothing. It is disgraceful.

I am registered with Eden and they have a large maternity section. I have had a position near Aylesbury which came through an agency called Lemonjellychildcare solutions.

Don't worry you have plenty of time to find someone suitable. I personally think it would be better to get someone a bit later and maybe have a postnatal doula for a few hours a day in the begining.

I have to work around my husband's leave so I don't take bookings unless I know the dates he is home.

How hideously unprofessional! It's definitely possible to find someone in 5 months though.

Where in Bucks? And how long are you looking for someone for?

I might fit your bill (am definitely not an old bag!) but it depends rather on your dates and whether I'll be in the country at the time.

Eden I'd recommend from my side.

themaleworrier · 11/07/2010 12:07

Hi Frakkit; we are in Beaconsfield and the baby is due 16th December and we would want someone for 4 weeks.

Very poor form from the MN.

I can recommend Greycoat Maternity, Maternity Solutions and Lemonjelly.
